Welcome from Jawga, Vegas what a cool place to live, haven't been there in a dozen years but always enjoyed my working visits
Vegas is an interesting place to live. From my observations, there are those that live here that want absolutely nothing to do with what Vegas was built on. Those folks act like being anywhere near the casino areas is a bit like going to the dentist. I personally don't understand why you don't just move to Scottsdale or Phoenix or wherever. But hey, whatever.
Then you have those that work in the properties. They are on the Strip all day everyday. The last place they want to be on their days off is where they work. I get that.
Lastly, there are those like my wife and I that love being on the Strip. We love the food, shopping, drinking, whatever it has to offer. We live just a stones throw from LasVegasBlvd, and wouldn't want it any other way. However, our way of life or thinking, I do think, is in the minority, of those that actually live here.
Like any city with any sort of population base, it is what you make of it. Vegas is actually one of the smaller cities I have lived in (Chicago, Atlanta, London, and spent a better part of the 90's traveling to Tokyo.) And though every city I have lived in, whatever your vice is, you can find it ie. drink, women, drugs, gambling etc. The difference with Vegas is that it finds you. It is not a city for the weak willed, that is for sure.
All of which is just my humble opinion of course :)
Weak willed and well heeled.
Hey RA302... Me and another guy I work with are both headed to the Gartner conference at the Venetian in December. Since we are both bourbon drinkers, I just started my search for good places to get some good bourbon in Vegas. So I was wondering if you had any suggestions or places that you like to go? The two places I've seen mentioned are The Bourbon Bar @ The Venetian and then some place called The Whisky Attic/Freakin' Frog which seems to have some sort of "Whisky Experience" where you pay a set amount and get a flight of whisky's (which I assume aren't all bourbon's...)
Anyway, being a local I was curious to your take on where to go?
I apologize for the delayed response. I didn't receive a notification that the thread had been added to, and I hadn't checked it in a while.
I have not been to The Bourbon Bar and it's been years since I have been to the Freakin' Frog. So unfortunately I can't comment on either of those. However, I can tell you what some places that we have been recently that have had good selections.
I will start off by saying that both Emeril's and WolfGang Puck's places seem to have a pipeline to hard to get your hands on bourbons.
The wife and I were just over at Table10 at the Palazzo (connected to the Venetian), which is an Emeril's place, and my wife drank 2012 Stagg while I drank 2012 Four Roses single barrel Limited Edition and Parker's Heritage 6th edition. I have had a few of the Papi's there also. However, I believe they are out at the moment. Overall they have a very nice selection of bourbon. Hagen(sp?), the bar manager, does a great job there getting his hands on premium stuff, and the prices are fairly reasonable for the Strip.
We were over at Sage at Aria this past Friday and they (surprisingly) had many of the 2013 BT antique collection among some other premiums. My wife drank 2013 Stagg and also had some Russell Reserve Single Barrel. I started with 2013 Eagle Rare 17y/o and switched to 2013 Stagg Jr. Pricing on the antiques is a bit steep however.
An odd place that actually has a nice bourbon selection is Wolfgang Puck's pizza joint in the Crystal's mall, which is connected to the Aria casino. It has been a few months since we have stopped by, however, the last time we grabbed a drink there they had Parker's Heritage 5th and 6th editions. They don't have a huge selection of bourbon (hey, it's a pizza joint), however, they have high quality bourbon. Pricing is fair for the Strip.
Some of the properties have deals with the distilleries and get special selections. I believe Aria has a deal with Brown/Foreman and they get special selections of Woodford Reserve, which is served throughout the casino's floor bars. If you google, there are a few articles about which casino's have deals and serve special selections.
This is what I can think of off the top of my head at the moment. I will try to keep this updated, as the wife and I are out and about at the Strip restaurants fairly often.
RA ... welcome and enjoy! This is a great place to relax and have a few fingers of bourbon ...
I just wanted to give a bit of a update of a few restaurants on the strip and their bourbon choices...
Most of the places we have frequented over the last month haven't had much other than the standard issue stuff.
Wolfgang Puck's pizza joint at Crystals Mall (next to Aria) had some 5th edition Parker Heritage still as of 12/14/2013. I ended up drinking 4R single barrel.
Comme Ca at Cosmopolitan had some George T Stagg as of 12/14/2013. It seems they have finally finished off the EC18 stock they had. I think my wife and I probably drank a bottle worth of it, while they had it. I really enjoyed it. Anyway, I drank two pours of the G.T.S. while there.
Table10 (at the Venetian) is money for selection at the moment. Hagen does an awesome job getting his hands on the hard to obtain bottles.
Some of the more hard to find bottles they had as of 12/17/2013 were: EC 20yr, EC 21yr, 4R LE 2012, 4R SmB LE 2013, JeffRes 15 & 18yr, Michter's SB 20yr, Michter's SB 25yr, PH 5th ed, ORVW 10yr, VWSR 12yr, PVW 15yr, PVW 20yr, PVW 23yr
I drank pours of the 4R SmB LE and the EC 21yr.
Nowhere else we have been has had anything worth mentioning.
I hope that helps someone. Regards.
