The fact is, from many parts of the world -- not less, California -- very fine wine has become quite pedestrian. Bad wine has become the exception.
It's a good thing!

I'm going to throw back a bourbon or two and then head for some Belgians. Which ones? I don't know.
Abstaining, still.
Back home after spending the night on a plane. Fininshing off some Pappy 15. It's good to be home and not have to look at bright blue Hawaiian drinks, although I did enjoy some good Mai Tais to get in the tropical mood.
I think the taste was probably from the barrels used.

Last night had a Baker's, a Pappy 15, and OGD BIB and an EWSB. Feeling slightly groggy this morning. Should have stopped with the Pappy.
A vatting of Pappy 15 (current bottling), Bulleit, Weller 107 and OF 100.
There might be some Four Roses Barrel Strength in there too.
It is a very aromatic, well-blended combination, there is some astringency from the eldest whiskey in it but balanced by the younger ones added. Very potent. Quite soft and smooth on the palate.
(In the background I am playing a Mamas and Papas CD. Listening to Dream a Little Dream of Me (basically a solo performance by the late, mucho-talented Cass Elliot). I think the opening guitar passage must have inspired Paul McCartney's opening to Blackbird. The first four notes on each sound identical to me. The jazzy guitar on the Mamas and Papas tune goes in a different direction than on the Beatles cut but the first four guitar notes sound the same to me on both).

Well, emptied a bottle of 2006 Stagg by pouring the remains into my current 2007 Stagg. Yes, I know, some will see that as sacrilege, but I disagree -- especially since I think the increasing price and (I think) the receding (or, at best, stagnant) taste quality of Stagg has rendered it much less desireable than it once was.
Anyway, I have long since ceased to be one of those who insists on drinking Stagg without dilution. In fact, I think that's blinding oneself to those taste qualities it does have. Thus, I poured my 'Gillmanized' Stagg underneath a fair amount of diet Bubba cola (the Sav-a-Lot store brand!), and I enjoy it just fine that way. Sure, I tasted it neat first -- and discern a lot more flavor along with the cola, which is much improved by the whiskey:grin:.
Tim, your putting Stagg in soda and not caring what anyone thinks, reminds me of a line out of a movie. Apparently, the main character had an addiction to porn and when asked about it he replied: Hell, I've gone so far, I'm way beyond porn, I've come full circle, I'm back to looking at the underwear ads in the Sears and Roebuck catalog.
Edited to add: I apologize if that's too crude
