Re: Bakers - Wins Awards But Gets No Love Here?
One of the highlights of the past three Samplers for me has been enjoying a pour of Baker's with Jerry Dalton. Like Jeff and several others here, it is my favorite Beam bottling.
I hope Jerry will be around again this year, even though not in the role of Master Distiller.
Re: Bakers - Wins Awards But Gets No Love Here?
FWIW,I find Bakers to be one of the best of the Beam "small batch" collection. Only problem I have is when I see it and order it in a bar, the bartender invariably reaches for the Makers....
Re: Bakers - Wins Awards But Gets No Love Here?
I think I liked it last time I drank some. I don't drink Beam products very often because I like many others better (except for the old stuff). But that's just me.

I finally picked up a bottle today and am enjoying a good pour presently. I agree with Ratcheer that this is a very dry bourbon which might explain why whiskey mag and others rate it so high since it's closer in dryness to a scotch or other whiskey. I find it reminds me a lot of JBB-- just a higher proof. Still, it is a very fine offering with a sweet nose, sweet opening and then a very spicy burn with a slight lingering of sweetness at the end (very slight). All in all a good bourbon. I won't speak yet on whether I'd buy another until I've enjoyed a good portion of the bottle as I need to warm up to most new offerings.

Howdy,
JBB is my favorite, but I'll have to put Baker's on my "must sample" list. Is it good with Diet Coke?

Dunno, I drink my whiskey neat or with some ice if it's a Stagg. If you're mixing with Coke I'd stick to some of the cheaper stuff (But no slouch) like Weller Special Reserve ($13) or Weller Antique ($19). I'm not knocking mixers but I think $40 for a Baker's is high priced for a mixer.
Re: Bakers - Wins Awards But Gets No Love Here?
I absolutely love Booker's, with just a couple of ice cubes and a teeny bit of water.
I haven't tried Baker's yet, but it sounds like I should. Great thread and discussion.
Re: Bakers - Wins Awards But Gets No Love Here?
I just found a dusty Bakers 107 and brought it home. Anybody familiar with the batch coding? This one states B-85-001
Re: Bakers - Wins Awards But Gets No Love Here?
I think you found one of the very first batch.
Re: Bakers - Wins Awards But Gets No Love Here?
I think so too (the plainish white label would give it away). If so, this is the best Baker's. I recall tasting a sample kindly offered by Tim Sousley, and have had it on other occasions. It had a velvety texture and a vigorous yet refined taste. Rather better than subsequent bottlings, IMO.
