Hello from San Diego
Hello from San Diego. I have enjoyed reading many posts over the last few moths. I enjoy a nice glass or Bourbon and have been expanding my tastes based on all the great recommendations from the forum. I hope to share more as my knowledge increases.
I have a question and hope you don’t mind.
My wife is about to give birth to our first child, a son. I wanted to pick up a bottle and stash it away in his honor, hoping to give it to him when he comes of age. I won’t be opening the bottle. Is there something that you would recommend for such an occasion? The local BevMo seems to have the best selection around.
Thanks,
Satch

Bottles of 07 Stagg, Weller and PVW would be a nice honor... and welcome to the site... a toast to you upcomming fatherhood....

Re: Hello from San Diego
Thank you for the toast. Is the Stagg carried in specialty shops?

Welcome to the board!
That is a great reason to stash a bottle. Depending on how hard you want to look and the proof your interested in....I like dusty bottles of National Distillers products and current bottles of Old Charter 12 and any Old Rip or Pappy VanWinkle. There are plenty of other great and unique bottles so, don't go too crazy searching. Semi-dusties are great as well: ER101, WTRR101, OCPR13, WLW100, etc...

The BevMo may be able to still get it..... they are online as well.

Congrats, and welcome to Sb.com. Anything Van Winkle would be good, or maybe your favorite bourbon. Enjoy the site and have fun. Joe

Re: Hello from San Diego
Since your child will be born in 2008, perhaps something from the '08 BTAC would be appropriate. The collection is released in the Fall, so I would try to grab something form the '07 BTAC to hedge your bet in the (unlikely) event that you can't get something from '08.
Congrats on the impending fatherhood and welcome to the site.

Thanks callmeox. I am still learning all the acronyms. What does BTAC stand for?

Check out this site for an explanation of the Antique Collection.

Re: Hello from San Diego
Two other "vintage dated" bourbons you might want to consider:
Old Forester "Birthday Bourbon", about $38 (less than any BTAC). I think they're about to release the '08 (if they haven't already). The '07 was fabulous.
Also Evan Williams Single Barrel has a yearly release. Okay stuff, not as good as a BTAC or the OF BB, but usually under $30.
