Sticky: Re: BOTM 3/14: Maker's Mark

Yes it is...but it is a far superior product to the Weller Special Reserve they are pushing at 5 years (at best) now. I think if you did a blind taste test of current (as of in the last 6 months) WSR...

Sticky: Re: BOTM 4/14: Weller Special Reserve

I'd have to disagree. If we are talking NAS WSR available now and not the 7 year or even the very first NAS stuff they produced, then Maker's is far better than current WSR. Maker's compared to...

Sticky: Re: BOTM 3/14: Maker's Mark

It is my go to in restaurants. Goes well with a lot of food. I have MM46 a lot at home. I think if they aged it 10-12 years and bottled it at 100 proof it would blow away anything else available...

    Re: Hello from Houston

Welcome Alex! I pretty much go to Spec's on default. Nice to know we have some choices in our part of town. I have seen the store as I live in the Bay Area. I will certainly stop by when I drink up...

Sticky: Re: BOTM 12/13: J.W. Dant BIB

I have never been fortunate enough to have a dusty Dant, but I think the current Dant BIB is good stuff for the price.

I would hold your enthusiasm myself (I am). I loved the old stuff also but I think it is a sure bet the new stuff will be younger.

Sticky: Re: BOTM 6/13: Wild Turkey Rye 101

Yeah, I am afraid you are right. I think when/if it comes back it will be much younger they way the 101 bourbon has become. I thought maybe my tastes had changed so I tried another new WT 101...

    Re: Howdy, from Austin, TX

Welcome fellow Texan! If you have never had a wheated bourbon (the two you had were rye recipe bourbons..both are still majority corn just either rye or wheat as the secondary grain) I would...

That is an affirmative. It will sneak up on you if you aren't careful! I find Knob Creek Single Barrel that way as well. It is deliciously smoky, sweet and nutty yet 120 proof..

Sticky: Re: BOTM 4/13: Old Grand Dad 114

It would not include Maker's, but frankly if any most of the Beam hater's had never tasted glut-era Beam or ND OGD they would not even mention Beam funk. OGD 114 is very good, just buy it, and enjoy...

Sticky: Re: BOTM 4/13: Old Grand Dad 114

It took me a while to grow to like it as I am partial to wheaters as well (obviously from my handle)..but I really, really love the stuff. I try to always have it around along with Weller 12 or MM 46.

    Re: Greetings from Balcones Distillery

Sorry I could not make it as I was out of town. I read where the single malt won an award in a blind tasting against some Scotch single malts..pretty cool.

Haven't seen it in Houston yet, but have not been to Downtown Spec's lately. I sure intend to try it as I love Bulleit and Willet LDI ryes

    Re: Greetings from Balcones Distillery

Welcome Winston, from a fellow Texan. I have been thinking about trying a Balcones whiskey for quite some time, but it's hard to spend the bucks when there are so many great bourbons and ryes at 1/2...

    Re: Howdy From Texas

Howdy, fellow Texan! Not to get off topic, but there are a ton of non-peated Scotches. I'd bet there are a few you would like..maybe not though. I used to be all Scotch and have gradually moved to...

    Sticky: Re: BOTM 10/12: Larceny

I have never had Rebel Reserve and don't plan on it...as far as a head-to-head with MM. MM has a nicer, thicker, mouthfeel compared to Larceny and is sweeter. Larceny is more complex, more woody. MM...

    Sticky: Re: BOTM 10/12: Larceny

There are no rebates in Texas, I guess because we are big wheater country. I like Larceny, especially at a price point of $21. However, it isn't as good as Weller 12 ($23) and is hard choice with...
