Re: BOTM, 3/08: Old Charter 12yo

This has been a favorite of mine from the moment I tasted it.

It is quite sweet, but manages to avoid being one-dimensional. This is probably owing mostly to its age, which allows it to take on...

Re: New Member from Gigaplex, Texas

    Ray,

Guess I missed this a couple of weeks back. Welcome aboard!

OC10 is available in most of the stores I frequent, though I do know it has gone up in price and is now not quite the bargain...

    Re: BOTM,11/07:Basil Haydens

It will be different. I have many bottles of this stuff w/the 8yr age statement. Some signifcantly older whiskey made it in. For the most part, that's a good thing, but I opened a bottle recently...

Re: BOTM, 6/07: Jim Beam Black

    Chuck,

I finally got around to picking up some tamarind candy at my local Asian supermarket, a soft candy similar (probably) to what you had. Indeed there is something Beam blackish about it, and...

    Re: Wheat vs. Rye

    Agreed on all points, Gary.

IIRC, Chuck has said that 1792 is one of the higher-barley recipes out there. Try tasting it next to a mid-shelf pour with less barley. I think barley does a nice job...

    Re: BOTM, 7/07: Blanton's

I often see RHF for the same price as Blanton's, but it's usually $10 less or so. I did find an obviously mispriced bottle for $26.99 once.

At any rate, I've also never seen Blanton's for less...

    Re: BOTM, 7/07: Blanton's

    Tim,

Good point. And I prefer RHF and ETL - both cheaper - to Blanton's, based on admittedly limited experience with the latter. Given the single-barrel variations that can occur, I suppose...

    Re: New to the forum

    Welcome!

I'll echo the congratulations on amassing a fine array of whiskeys already.

And, since you're in Texas, a Barton brand you can pick up that I'm fond of is Tom Moore BIB. Not as refined...

Re: BOTM, 6/07: Jim Beam Black

Agreed that JBB is somewhat middle-of-the-road. It is an excellent reference point for other whiskeys, and a much cheaper way than the mid- and top-shelf stuff to get people interested in bourbon. I...

Re: BOTM 5/07, Four Roses Single Barrel

On a trip to Chicago in March, I bought a bottle of Small Batch at the Halsted location. $36. Single barrel was $47.

Re: Peat-malted barley from the U.S. or Canada?

Beers stateside have done this for some time now. Most notable is the Alaskan brewing co.'s Smoked Porter, a vintage-dated beer brewed with alderwood-smoked malt. A couple of other use cherry and...

Re: Tasting Notes on EW 1783?

WT did the same thing when they dropped the 8-yr age statement and went to "No. 8 brand." EW 1783 doesn't sell a ton, so some stores in Dallas will have 10-yo product aroundl, as it changed pretty...

Re: What's is your daily Pour?

Though I, too, keep a lot of whisk(e)y around, and like a good bit of variety day-to-day, I notice that my OC12, OGD BIB, WT101, and Knob Creek wind up empty more frequently than anything else. All...

Re: BOTM 4/07: William Larue Weller

Well, I was on the edge anyway, and re-reading the thread has done it: I'm going to buy a bottle tomorrow. Yes, there are a few I know of still around. I don't have the cash, but it has to happen.

Re: BOTM, 1/06: Elmer T. Lee Single Barrel

I'm really kicking myself for not buying a bottle at Binny's now. I've been pondering asking my favorite liquor store to get some ETL (they've picked up two other whiskeys when I asked about them),...

Re: BOTM, 1/06: Elmer T. Lee Single Barrel

I have yet to try this stuff, as my go-to "cheap" store doesn't stock it, and for whatever reason, the price around here keeps going up. $32.99 is now the cheapest I can find it. In Chicago, I nearly...

Re: BOTM, 12/06: Old Grand Dad 114

Last night I got into one of my ND OGD 114, the first I've opened. Had some issues with the cork, but it came out in one piece. I decanted due to the cork's, er, degraded state.

    The first thing I...

Re: If you only had three..

Following the pattern of other posts,

    If money is a concern:

    1. OGDBIB (rye-heavy)
    2. Old Charter 12/90 (sweet, low-rye, but balanced)
    3. Weller 12 year (this, being a wheater, would be...

Re: BOTM, 1/07: Old Grand Dad BIB

Enjoying a pour of this in a snifter to bid it farewell as BOTM.

The nose tonight seems to be orange zest and cinnamon, maybe some just-burnt pie crust. Oddly, the first taste is sweet, but then...

Re: BOTM, 1/07: Old Grand Dad BIB

I've recently picked up assorted older bottlings of OGD BIB. A bottle from 1976 was six years old when bottled, a bottle from 1988 was eight years old (due, I guess, to the "glut" of whiskey at that...

Re: BOTM, 1/07: Old Grand Dad BIB

I love OGD BIB. The rye character is definitely out front, and I've recently come across a couple of older bottlings in which this is supposedly even more true. I eagerly await the chance to find...

Okay, cool. I'll probably get both of the BIB and one or two other bottles, since none were over $10. Thanks for the insights.
