I'll second all of the recommendations above, and add Weller Antique (this site's "Bourbon of the Month" for January)

Yeah it's on Michigan Ave in Corktown. I've heard wonderful things about it, but the one time I tried to get in there was like a 1 hour wait (Tigers game day).

Bought some yesterday. At $24 a bit higher than most seem to be paying, and I really didn't know what to expect being completely unfamiliar with the Wellers. Well worth it, though ... a healthy dose...

Being a newbie, I haven't tried something from all of them (yet), but of the ones I've sampled:

Beam Clermont/Boston: Knob Creek (haven't had Baker's or Booker's)

That's a very good point, and for some things and some bourbons (not many, though) the anticipation is better than the reality.

I'm with ya ... I have no intention of ever buying bourbon that I don't intend to drink (now!), and when I get a new bottle it screams :893drillsergeant-th at me until it has been sampled.

But...

Hear, hear, TNbourbon ... and MM isn't "bad" bourbon. Not as good, perhaps, but certainly not bad.

They may have told me the proof, but if they did I didn't retain the info ... sorry. It wasn't horrible by any means, but I would describe it as raw and basically one dimensional. The taste was a...
