    Re: Rum Forum

I had the chance to taste it thanks to the generosity of a fellow SBer that had one. Remarkably sweet like a liquid candy and very interesting but as much as I would like to have one they are way too...

Re: Sipping rum suggestions for beginners

If you aren't choosing a rum from Barbados or a French Agricole or some of the Jamaican rums like Appleton you are likely to get less of a whiskey similarity.

    Zaya, Zacapa, Santa Teresa, Pampero...

    Re: Rum Forum

Thanks. I also found it pleasant enough if somewhat sweet and one dimensional when I tried it last year during a Wednesday tasting. I

do kind of like the "canteen" bottle though...

    Re: Rum Forum

I find the basic 4yo "gold" and 4yo extra dry (a white filtered rum) to be decent for cocktails. I think the white "Extra Dry" might help reduce the harsh alcohol overtones because of the filtering....

Re: Sipping rum suggestions for beginners

No particular shortage of the Appleton 12 or rum in general on the shelves here that I have noted. Might just be an Australian thing.

Re: Sipping rum suggestions for beginners

A lot of things I don't particularly find appealing about "Capn Jimbo" and his website so I am somewhat loath to recommend it but this guide might be useful. The prices are a bit out of date by now...

I like the other two but never been a huge fan of Pyrat which I find heavily sugared and flavored (orange flavor mostly) in a seemingly artificial way. All sourced rum blended currently in Guyana...

Yes, perhaps my favorite PR rum but seems to be harder to find generally at least here in Atlanta.

Re: Sipping rum suggestions for beginners

Where to begin? Tons of information in the new Rum Forum of course. For a whiskey drinker I tend to suggest Mount Gay XO or Appleton 12. If you think you might like the rums that are typically...

Don't know much about them but would be interesting to note what their base is (probably molasses) and where they get it. Presumably they make their own rum but interesting to know how it is made...

    Re: Rum Forum

Nice review. I too find it quite unique and refreshing. It is not like a pineapple flavoured spirit but if pineapple is not your thing then be forewarned, you will know pineapple is in there!

    Re: Rum Forum

Preferred rums can change almost as quick as whiskey as more stuff makes it to the shelf so this more about what I am enjoying recently.

And currently I am enjoying the new Plantation "Stiggins...

It is spelled that way because Haiti was a French colony before independence following the slave revolution in the early 1800's. Rhum Barbancourt says they still make their rum the same way as do the...

On second thought maybe that should be:

It doesn't matter how we made it, it's really, really good. No, seriously, you don't need to try it first, just trust us. We promise! So good in fact it...

It is a "solera" rum so it is a blend of rums with probably very little 23yo rum in the mix and it clearly has a lot of sugar added. In my...

    Re: Rum Forum

Pretty easy to find locally. I think it is good but it is about as expensive as the rhum from Martinique! Still, I am probably overdue to refresh my memory of this rum.
