    Re: Save ye Money!?

As a counterpoint, some whiskies have limited supplies - and as the whisky ages, it gets more expensive. Not only do we have to contend with the angels' share, but the warehouse space taken by a...

Re: BOTM, 10/07: VOB Bottled in Bond

Unless I manage to get to Kentucky, it won't find its way onto my shelf... but Chuck graciously made it available at his tasting session back in April. What a shame it isn't more widely available, in...

    Re: New Member from NC

Welcome aboard! I also started out with SMS, but I now tend to go for bourbon or rye more often than not. Sometimes, though, I just have to get a good peat fix (a couple of nights ago I revisited my...

    Re: Bulliet Bourbon

The same thing happens in Illinois: Marseilles (mar-SALES), Joliet (JO-lee-ette), Des Plaines (Dess Planes), San Jose (Sann Joe's) are just a few examples.

Go north to Wisconsin... well, there's a...

    Re: Wheat vs. Rye

Less simple: I've noticed some wheaters (like PVW 15, or ORVW 15) that have quite a spicy character to them. Even then, though, there's a certain mellowness in wheaters that is quite different from...

Re: BOTM 8/07: Van Winkle 12yo Lot "B"

I finally opened the bottle of Lot B that I recently purchased. As a recent purchase, it may be Bernheim stock.

Whatever its provenance, it is mighty fine stuff. I had a pour of it, and I'm now...

    Re: intrigued

Also, in the rye department, if you can find Sazerac Rye, it's superb as well. The 6yo version (sometimes it's actually 7 or 10) comes in a very antique-looking bottle. The 18yo version is one of the...

    Re: BOTM, 7/07: Blanton's

I'm trying my first pour of Blanton's tonight, after bringing home a bottle.

I'd agree with Gillman on this one - it's a bit on the dry side, but there's some nice spicy sweetness going on, too....

    Re: Bulliet Bourbon

    :slappin:

Thank goodness for forums like this - it's nice to be able to compare notes and pick apart claims about various bottles on the shelf!

FYI, I love Bulleit, and I wouldn't turn down a...

    Re: Newbie Here

That really depends on personal preference. Try it each way.

I usually drink my whiskey neat, unless it's going into a cocktail. Sometimes I'll add a splash of water, but I don't care for ice...

    Re: Newbie Here

Old Grand-Dad, particularly the 100-proof bonded version or the 114, would be well worth trying out. For a change of pace, Elmer T. Lee, or Buffalo Trace.

If you want to give wheaters another go,...

Re: BOTM, 6/07: Jim Beam Black

JBB is a good solid pour for me - and if I'm traveling and find myself sans bottle in an area with limited selection, it's a go-to.

That being said, I can pick up KC at Costco for just a few bucks...

Well, a bottle of this somehow materialized in my bunker, so I'm having a pour. Mmmmmmmmmm. Two thumbs up!

  15. Re: Peat-malted barley from the U.S. or Canada?

St. George's Single Malt uses beech and alder to smoke the grain. It's a bit on the strange side - the dominant note that I've tasted in it would be cocoa. I don't know if recent bottlings have...

Re: BOTM 5/07, Four Roses Single Barrel

So far, my only taste of FRSB came courtesy of Chuck (thank you!), and I must say it's superb. This is one I fervently hope will come to Chicagoland...

Re: What's is your daily Pour?

I also tend to rotate "daily" pours in an irregular manner. Premium bourbons and ryes tend to go slower, and SMS tends to be expensive enough that it goes slow, too.

    Re: George Dickel

I don't think it's a "hillbilly" image problem so much as the giant marketing machine behind JD. The masses buy into the marketing, while those who really know look for George instead.

    I haven't...

    Re: Mash Bill

Old Grand-Dad and Bulleit have high-rye mash bills, and OGD is available in 86, 100, and 114 proof. Don't forget to try some straight rye as well - Sazerac 6yo, Rittenhouse BIB, and Wild Turkey Rye...

Re: BOTM 4/07: William Larue Weller

The '06 is outstanding, and the '05 was good as well, but I'll give the nod to the '06. I have one bottle of '06 in reserve, which will wait until the next BTAC release unless temptation wins. Sadly,...

    Re: BOTM, 10/05: Buffalo Trace

Another possibility - look for a single-barrel bottling. Certain stores (like Binny's and Sam's in Chicago) get single-barrel bottlings that are identified by a sticker. I've seen BT, ETL, Weller 12,...

Re: Hi folks! Buying my first bottle...

    Welcome, Dan!

Knob Creek is a good place to start indeed, and the other suggestions in this thread are also excellent choices.

It would also be worth looking into Elmer T. Lee, and Weller 12yo....

    Re: Infused Bourbon

I had a sample of the Phillips Union cherry-flavord whiskey one time at Binny's, and while I thought it was good, I'd rather make my Manhattans with rye.
