Freezer Warning

We have talked before about putting bourbon in the freezer, something many people do with vodka. I never thought about this before, but the information below I found on the website of a craft distiller and it makes a lot of sense. Note that this would apply to any cork-finished spirit.

"It is dangerous to put any corked bottle that contains liquor in the freezer. The cork will shrink and the alcohol will evaporate, leaving just water. Eventually, the water will freeze and the bottle will crack. It may even explode."

Another excellent reason why NOT to put bourbon in the freezer. My buddy used to keep a bottle of Jack (black) in the freezer, but hey, no cork on that one. Plus, he didn't know any better..hehehehe.

OK.... there is a significant time frame to shrink the cork and burst the bottle. If you are holding on to your bourbon that long... you deserve what you get

It would take weeks, if not months to shrink the cork enough to cause this process to occur... and it would also need to be near zero for that time frame.

Cork is used as an insulator because of its great properties against cold temps.

I'd bet you a bottle of Rare Breed that Jimmy doesn't leave a bottle in the freezer long enough for damage to occur.
