" I never met a Weller I didn't like"
I picked up a 200ml bottle of the current OGD BIB today. I recently opened a ND bottle and really liked it which was a surprise because all of the other times I've had OGD I didn't care much for it so I thought a side by side was in order.
Current (NAS, DSP-KY-230)
--------------------------
A - Very light in color, yellowish, almost reminds me of Mellow Corn. faint, thin legs, oddly spaced
N - some rye spice, perhaps it's just the power of suggestion but I can smell oily corn more than anything
T - hot, fiery actually, cinnamon flavored corn
F - the heat and corn continue and roll down the back of the throat
1987 ND (Aged 8 years, bottled Fall 1987, DSP-KY-14)
----------------------------------------------------
A - Dark brown with very few and faint legs
N - sweet maple syrup; very inviting and not hot at all
T - there's some rye spice but very little, chocolate, sweet
F - now there's the rye spice and the heat, reminds me of straight rye more than bourbon now, long, moderately hot finish
Conclusion
----------
I'll take the old one over the current any day, it's very different than the current and has the nose and taste of a more expensive premium bottle imo. At $35 or so for a handle this was a bargain but the current one really reflects it's price range! The ND carries an 8 year age statement however the current does not, by it's appearance alone, nevermind the taste, you can logically assume that the current is much younger.

Russell's Reserve 90 prf.
I started with one neat, then for the next one I poured it over cracked ice, I like this bourbon better that way.

I think someone in another thread wrote that J. Russell keeps his RR in the freezer (or maybe I read that at the WT website). I haven't tried it in the freezer, but I usually have a pour of this one between VW Lot B and either KC or EC 12. The RR 90 has become one of my favorites. I opened my first bottle the same night as I opened a KC. My initial impression was that the RR wasn't as bold as the KC. The RR didn't stand out at first but after a couple of days it seemed that all of the flavors started coming through. It went from bland to tasty and "mellow". Now I prefer the RR to KC in a side-by-side. (KC is still my fave follow-up to RR.) I've read that the earlier versions (101) get props around here. I guess I found it too late for the higher proof.
It's WTRB he keeps in the freezer but I've read else where that the colder bourbon the more reduced the flavor.

Joe -- how did you like it? That's one of my favorite pours....my pick over the OCPR & Centennial.
Tonight I'm downing some Old Crow 10/86 from that 1968 chess set.....I think I'm on a mission to finish it -- it's going down so easy...very delicious -- the only thing I can even remotely liken it to that I've had is the current Rare Breed (WT03RB) with it's sweet, herbal thing. Still the Crow has a butterscotch character that I've never encountered before....yummy.
