So I get a phonecall from my wife today.....
She heard a noise and wasn't sure what it was.
Then copped an overwhelming banana smell.
Followed by an overwhelming bourbon smell

Eventually found the Wild Turkey Stampede bottle that had exploded. Sitting there one minute minding it's own business and in pieces the next.

Keeping in mind I did purchase this bottle empty, and filled it myself with a mix of 8yo 101, RR101, WTKS, WTRB, WTAS, WT12 etc it still brought a tear to my eye. I was looking forward to trying that mix!

It's a good thing I just scored a full and sealed Stampede just yesterday

It's pretty hot here right now, but tomorrow is supposed to be hotter, which has me worrying about the rest of my bottles.

There must have been some weird tension in the bottle and in found a flaw in the glass... it brings a tear to my eye seeing it though...

I have seen this happen in composits, crystal structures and in lumber (internal heat and water expantion) but not glass I can think of... sorry for you loss...

Very interesting. As a non-scientist, I wonder if the liquor expanded in the neck due to the heat, created pressure against the capsule (held down securely by the old-fashioned pot-stopper closure) and that pressure was transferred back down to the glass frame and split it, perhaps finding a seam or other weak point. It's a reminder I think to safely store liquors of any kind since, not so much from this rare event, but other types of accidents, bottles can lose their contents in one way or another. I try to keep mine segregated so that if something happens any breakage or liquid seeping is localised but it's not always easy to do this.

Is there a chance that sunlight (or even a strong reflection) focused on the bottle, causing the liquid inside to heat up enough to pressurize the bottle and cause it to burst? Those swing cap bottles seal really well, and unlike a cork wouldn't possibly be the first point of failure in a pressurized situation.

not a scientist either, but that's exactly what i thought. that stopper i bet did it...a cork would've been the weak link in the 'chain' and woud've popped.

Sounds to me like the problem was sociological. Look at all the different (possibly incompatible) turkeys you tried to cram in to one single bottle. And WILD turkeys to boot. I'd say the bottle exploded cuz there was a major cockfight takin' place inside.
