Hey Todd, one of the ways I separate out a barkeep is to order Bourbon on the rocks with a lemon twist. If the drink comes back with a slice of lemon the guy doesn't know his trade.
I also started as a bourbon and coke guy and this site certainly has enough info to expand those horizons. As a cheesehead, you have to like the old fashioneds.
