    Got good sipping rum

Looking for suggestions for a good sipping rum. I want to move up the shelf from Sailor Jerry or Captain Morgan.

Some of the very best is the Pyrat Cask 23. It is pricey, but very, very good...

The Zanya is a middle shelf sipper that mixes well or is good straight...

Pampero Anniversairo, Ron Zacapa Centenario and El Dorado 15 year are three of my favorites.

The Ministry of Rum forum has a sipping rum thread. There is also
a Greatest Sipping Rum thread, though that one is members only).
Figger they'd be the folks to know. Edward Hamilton is the grand
poobah over there and seems quite knowledgeable.

I'm partial to Kilo Kai Spiced Rum, Old New Orleans 10 year old,
10 Cane, and Havana Club Anejo Reserva (if you can find it! )

    Re: Got good sipping rum

There are so many premium rums; about as many as bourbon. From where you're starting, Myer's is the next step. I love this rum. It's been my favorite for years. But, it's still an 'entry level' rum, though. I just suggested it to you so you can try it. It's cheap, but good quality.

It has a mildly-sweet taste, but not too sweet while thick and full-bodied. It has a taste of toasted coconut husks, fine oak, mild spice, strong molasses and dark caramel. Very smooth stuff, that isn't harsh or bitter. Mixes well, too.

However, if you want something the opposite of Myer's. Something light-bodied, mellow, fruity and lighter in color, go with Cruzan Single Barrel Rum. It has the nose of tropical fruits, like banana, mango and a splash of citrus like tangerine and lime. Aged in oak barrels for 8-10 years, it has that classic woodsy, oak taste and the usual hints of maple, butterscotch, vanilla and caramel.

I love the Zacapa 23; my favorite is Zaya 12 though. The Pyrat I bought had such an overwhelming orange flavor I really disliked it, it almost seemed like and orange liqueur, I don't know if all the Pyrats share that theme though.

The current Pyrat XO is much different than the juice that originally made Pyrat popular. Your right, it might as well be orange liquer. The cask version suffered with the change of ownership also but not as much.

The old Pyrat can still be found occasionally - it came in a real hand blown bottle, white box, and had two different color satin ribbons tied around the neck. It is a really good pour and makes a great sipper. It is not over infused with gooey flavorings like the new juice.

    Re: Got good sipping rum

With the Haitian devastation going on it brings to mind a question about their products.....specifically Rum. I have not tried any but here is an example:

Rhum Barbancourt 5 Star 8 Year Old Haitian Rum 750ml

Does anyone have an opinion on the quality etc. of Haitian rum?
Is there anything unique about it?

I know the Haitian soil has been devestated by poor agricultural use...sugar cane etc. over the centuries.
