I recently received a bottle of ZAYA (Trinidad - not Guatemala
or "Old Zaya" no longer produced dusty) and agree with those
who recommend it. It comes with a neck tag which reads
"World's Finest Sipping Rum" and 12 year old and five times
distilled. It is some of the smoothest rum I've tasted.
My only complaint - and not regarding the rum itself - is the
little knob in the bottom (top?) of the punt/kick-up on the
bottle bottom. I can't imagine what purpose that serves?
Is it to provide "thumb control" and assist in pouring?...
I'm a fan of the Zaya as well.
Just ordered a bottle of Barbancourt 15 year old .. Their estate reserve or whatever they call it. I'm down here in Haiti and have been wanting to try it, but we aren't allowed to drink. So ironically, even though I'm but miles from the distillery, I ordered it from the US to my home of record in the states. Lol
If you are a bourbon drinker and are interested in sipping some decent rum you might consider Bacardi 8 anos (Bacardi in general is held in the same light by rum afficiandos as Beam is by the bourbon crowd) as it has a complex flavor profile for a rum. Also Cruzan Single Barrel is excellent IMO. Of course taste is subjective, but I think these two are affordable and would probably be appealing bourbon drinkers.![]()
Dipimatico is great stuff.
"The most futile and disastrous day seems well spent when it is reviewed through the blue, fragrant smoke of a Havana Cigar"
I have been working on a bottle of Matusalem Gran Reserve over the last week or so. It splits the difference between the heavy sweet Demerara Rums like Zaya and the Lighter Cuban style like Cruzan Single Barrel. It's approachable and delicious if not especially complex.
Got back on the rum kick with the boys here on Sunday.... sipped on a bit of Havana Club Barrel Strength last evening with a short cigar..

I picked up a bottle of Flor de Cana 7yr based on recco's here. Glad I did, it's great stuff. Got some 4yr dry (white) as well for mixing, looking forward to the weekend. Cheers!

I just tried Appleton's 12 year old for the first time the other night. By far the best rum I've had.
Picked up a bottle of Aniversario Pampero from suggestions here, and some Spiced Jack 94 rum for mixing ($10 rebate means the spiced rum costs $3, should make a good party-mixer) Really like the Pampero.
