I was judge at the annual Pre-Derby Four Roses Julep Contest this week in Louisville. We covered it as a video story that I invite you to watch here with all mint julep recipes. First place used cherries, a Gastrique and Tamarind Soda..check it out.

    · 1 1/2 oz Dried Cherry Lemon Zest Gastrique

    · 2 oz Ginger Ale

    To make the Gastrique:

    · Boil and reduce
    · Dried Cherries
    · 2 cups sugar
    · 2 cups water
    · Juice of 3 lemons
    · Zest of 1 lemon

    Instructions:

I'm not so sure I'd want to be a judge at that contest. A Bacon Mint Julep just doesn't sound good.

That do look like a tasty Julep! I gotta try that. Thanx for the post.
Often I am forced to deal with the fact that I prefer bourbon over dealing with facts.

So far I have found Mint Juleps to be a vast disappointment. Maybe I will look over those recipes and see if anything looks drinkable.

Here's a little advice from CNN:

I've made the slushie, or something similar, before. It is very good.

I've had one. It's not as bad as it sounds.
