I attended the Party Source Angel’s Envy tasting hosted by Lincoln & Wes Henderson last night. AE is based on 5 -7 yo SBW. Lincoln wouldn’t reveal the source of the distillate. Some of it is finished for 3 - 6 months in used port wine casks. The finished bourbon is then blended to taste with the SBW. (Actually, for labeling purposes, all of the bourbon is reportedly entered into the port casks at least briefly.) The end product is not chill-filtered.
My impressions (based on the initial taste):
Appearance is coppery with a hint of red. Nose is delicate with vanilla and caramel. Taste is rich and refined and leaning (slightly) towards the sweeter side. Fruit notes are predominate… also raisins, toffee, and some light spiciness and maybe a bit of cocoa. The port reveals itself most in the finish, which lingers for some time. What impressed me the most is how well-integrated this bourbon is: the nose, entry, palate, and finish all flow seamlessly from one to the other. (Reminds me of the FR Mariages in this regard.) This is well-thought out and crafted whiskey; the master’s touch is evident.
This could certainly use more ABV (it’s 86.6 proof) but Wes & Lincoln were candid that they are aiming at a broad demographic. Wes did say they are planning a barrel-proof expression by Christmas.
The bottled is uniquely-shaped and elegant ---- however, IMO, the sans serif font used on the front cheapens the look somewhat.
This is the only wine-finished bourbon that I really like. Eminently drinkable. But this is different enough that it is probably not for everyone here. I’d suggest a try before you buy.
