Here's one for you......The Bourbon We Didn't Drink Today!
Last night a good friend threw a 20 year anniversary party for our golfing foursome. We all met at a new member gathering at Northgate CC 20 years ago and played every Saturday religiously for many years and still play together fairly often. Larry offered up his house as the site and we got going around 5pm Sunday. Rib eye roast and multiple bottles of Chimney Rock Cab, Shafer Merlot, Newton Cabs ....etc. At around 11pm his wife Karen brought out one of many bottles she uses to "decorate" around her house. A pristine VOF 8yo 1961/1969. I had seen their many bottles of VOF, VVOF. VEOF around the house and she knew I had spoken highly about them and their history. They wanted to open it but I knew it would go unappreciated at that late hour after 12 bottles of wine between 8 of us. So we just finished our night on wine and promised to not wait another 20 years before opening it.
I've told the story before about how they acquired these bottles, but I'll tell the abbreviated version again. Their son-in-law's grandfather was the long time sherrif in Tarrant County (Fort Worth). He recieved many gifts over the years including tons of bourbon........but he didn't drink. About 10 years ago he told Steve to come by his house and take home all these "gifts" he had been collecting in several closets and in the barn. There were numerous SW bottlings, old Jack Daniels, decanters of all types of whiskey, pocket knives, etc etc etc. Steve hauled it all home but didn't have room for all of it so gave away most of the VOF's, VVOF's etc and kept the JD stuff. These bottlings were all still in the original boxes wrapped in tissue. Unfortunately, most had been given away before I saw the bottles at Larry's and asked about them as I knew Larry doesn't drink bourbon.
