Speaking from experience, I'd have to say it's because the empties don't roll around as much on the pickup bed.

A couple of you got it. The formal answer is, "because square bottles don't roll around on the floor of your pick-up." Before everyone else copied the square bottle from Jack Daniel's, that was the customary explanation for why JD was in a square bottle.

Because when you work behind a bar and a fight breaks out, as a bartender you want to grab the square bottle to crack someone over the head with. He'll go down like a sack of potatoes and the bottle will still be intact as opposed to a round one.

Interesting you mention JD Chuck about that Chuck. When I was at a Johnie Walker tasting/promotion they menioned that his unique square bottle was made because it was easier for packaging and transport. He could transport more whisk(e)y that way with less breakage, that's what I heard.

I am sure everyone did their own thing on each side of the pond.
