Some info about Van Winkle Rye

Julian VanWinkle did a presentation at Whiskeyfest last week and mentioned a couple of things that fans of his VanWinkle Family Reserve 13 year old Straight Rye Whiskey might find interesting.

The whiskey currently being bottled for this product is actually 15 years old.

The mashbill is 51% rye, 38% corn, 11% malt. You might say it's "barely legal," i.e., it contains the minimum amount of rye to be legally called "rye whiskey." The purpose of this is to allow the sweetness of the corn to balance the rye character. Whatever, I think this is one terrific whiskey and hope it never runs out.

    [/QUOTE] Hear, hear!

Actually, for those of us of a certain age that's a possibility. I've threatened a time or two to buy enough to last the 17 years that the mortality tables predict for me. However, even at my meager level of consumption that much stock (say, 17 cases) would strain my storage capability, to say nothing of my current income and my marriage.

In all seriousness, to my taste the VWFRR is the most consistenly enjoyable whiskey I have found. The fact that it is also reasonably priced is a blessing bestowed upon us all by Julian Van Winkle III. I hope he knows how highly regarded he is by the typical StraightBourbonian.

    Yours truly,
    Dave Morefield
