    Bunker insurance

I've searched for this and saw a couple of threads over the years discussing this, but nothing within the recent past- I think the last one was around 08' or 09'.

I've taken out additional riders over the years for other personal items (jewelry, tools, firearms) that I want to make sure are covered in case of theft, lose, or destruction. Now as the bunker has grown over the last couple of years, I'm starting to think If it would be prudent to look into this for similar reasons.

So, for those of you that have gone this route, do you still carry it? Easy process, or did you ge strange looks when asking about it? Any requirements about taking/keeping a running inventory-requirement to come up with a replacement value??

Appreciate any thoughts or experiences you can share.

    Thanks
    B

    Re: Bunker insurance

Interesting question. It's definitely worth looking in to when the bunker starts to really grow, though I'm sure my insurance agent would give me a damned funny look when seeking a quote.

It's going to be hard to insure them for "replacement cost" as this is really a moving target. I'd also be interested to know what they would accept in the way of proof of value. I suppose an appraisal from an auction house that deals in rare spirits?

Also, depending on the size of your bunker, storing all that alcohol might interest them from a fire hazard point of view...it might have unintended consequences for the rest of your homeowner's policy.

    Re: Bunker insurance

I have a spreadsheet with all of my inventory from the bunker stored in multiple places and I also have every receipt scanned into my computer from about 90% of the purchases that I've made...that should take care of the proof of value aspect. It won't cover hard to replace bottle values but at least I would be able to get whole on what I've invested in my bunker.

    Re: Bunker insurance

I added an additional $50k insurance coverage for the bunker. Our insurer is either state farm or farmers and said it'd be covered for fire, theft and I'm not sure what else.

Previously, in Oregon, my State Farm agent specifically called the underwriter and got word for word confirmation that a whiskey collection would be insured against the same loss as any other household possession; however consumption, of course, would not be covered. Uh, really, duh

I now keep a live excel spreadsheet of every bottle unopened and those valuable at least 1/2 full, as well as photos of every indvidual bottle and the boxes they are. May be overkill, but I don't want to take chances. In doing my inventory I was shocked at the amount of bottles I have as well as the fact that a good 85% of them would be just about impossible to replace and many of the rest would be very difficult to replace so I figured a little work to make sure it was covered was worth it.

Since the computer is no good if the house burns down I keep a back up of said photos and excel sheet on a cloud as well as the cell phone.
