As a change of pace from the rowdiness of the French Quarter, we enjoy ducking into Arnaud's French 75 Bar for a quiet cocktail in an elegant environment.

    In no particular order:

Bar Tonique (820 N. Rampart St.) craft cocktails, dark room

Polo Lounge in the Windsor Court (300 Gravier St.) high rent district, great Sazeracs

Swizzle Stick @ The Lowe's (300 Poydras St.) another craft place

Napoleon House (500 Chartres St.) gotta go & have one just for the historical importance of this place.

Now, if you want to drink and EAT, I'd suggest:

    Cuvee 322 Magazine Street

    August 301 Tchoupitoulas St.,

    Parisole 1041 Dumaine Street

    Cochon 930 Tchoupitoulas St
    Mat Garretson
    HIGH WEST DISTILLERY

Will be down there myself in a few weeks. Can't wait!

Unfortunately Cuvee and Peristyle are no more.

In addition to the places suggested by mrviognier I'd suggest the following.

    Restaurants:
Galatoire's for the quintessential New Orleans experience. Wait in line and sit downstairs.
    Coquette
    Lilette
    Herbsaint
    Commander's Palace for brunch.
    Parkway or Casamento's for lunch.

    Bars:
Bar Uncommon in the Renaissance Pere Marquette Hotel where you can get one of these (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEr7ym4-r5I) from bartender Chris McMillan.
The Sazerac Bar in the Roosevelt Hotel
    d.b.a on Frenchman Street
    Cure uptown
The Maple Leaf or Tipitina's for some live music.
I haven't been yet but Bourbon House is supposed to have a decent bourbon selection.

My tourist tastes are distinctly blue-collar: Coop's Place on Decatur. Ignore the grunge, enjoy the food and drink.

    Talking Carousel Bar.

How noone has mentioned the Carousel Bar is completely beyond me...that is THE quintessential bar for cocktails in NOLA...they claim to be the birthplace of the Vieux Carre, and also one of the first bars to make the Ramos Gin Fizz.......and when was the last time you got to sit at a bar that rotates a full 360 in 40 minutes or so?

I also will second Bar Tonique, I knew that place was special when I waltzed in there unexpectedly and their WELL rye was Rittenhous 100 BIB. A truly special bar.

Enjoy NOLA, and definitely eat at Commander's Palace, land of turtle soup and 25 CENT MARTINIS AT LUNCH!!!!!!!!
