Hello from Columbus and a question...

Hello! I'm a newcomer from Columbus, Ohio and have, over the past year or so, developed a strong interest in whiskey. I am glad that I found this site, as it has a lot of info on bourbon and whiskey in general. I cruising through this site, I noticed that there seems to be a certain amount of... animosity towards templeton rye, but I haven't read where this comes from. I've never had it, never even really seen it on a shelf anywhere, but I'm curious as to where this comes from. Anyone out there help me?

The question "where does it come from?" is central to the issue. If you just looked at their Web site, you'd think the whiskey is made in a small town in Iowa and that it's the same whiskey that "became Al Capone’s whiskey of choice" during Prohibition.

If you look a little further you'll see that they admit they aren't distilling it themselves, but they imply it is being made for them using "the nearly century–old recipe handwritten on a small scrap of paper".

The truth of the matter is that they are buying whiskey that was already made by LDI, using LDI's recipe (which, I think, was Seagram's recipe for the rye component of their blended whiskeys). Everybody else selling LDI rye (and there are now quite a few of them) is using the same recipe.

The only relationship between the current Templeton Rye and the historic one they talk about on their site is the name. If the bottling is also done at LDI, then the only component of Templeton Rye that comes from Iowa is the marketing.
