Re: Signs you live in Bourbon Hell

Well ... speaking of the Commonwealth - be glad you don't live in Ontario. Add NJ + PA + OH then multiply it by 100% markup (tax) then you'll be close to hell.

Things we've never seen in ON: Weller (any Weller at all), BTAC, BTEC, Pappy (except for Lot B and ORVW10/90), most Four Roses (apart from Yellow label and Small Batch), any WT other than the bottom shelf 80 proof, and worst of all - any Rye except for Ritt BIB. No, wait - we've had Baby Saz on special release twice in the past 3 years - $45 if you can find it.

Here are some other examples of our pricing:
    Beam White $26
    WT 80 $28
    Bulleit $38
BT $40 (when they release a batch, once per year)
    EC12 $40
Corner Creek $40 (that's the best one - it's "on sale" now for $30)
    Knob Creek $46
    Lot B $72

Oh, and we have to listen to everybody calling Canadian Whisky "Rye" when it's not Rye. It's brown vodka. Frustrating.

Ouch! Sounds like slim pickins' in several places. I have to say that the last time I was in PA I didn't think the selection was too bad. Not the best, but I've seen worse. That said, it did make me appreciate what we have in Indy a little more. It's still frustrating to be right across the river from KY and see certain labels get shipped north and west of us but never make it here. At least Louisville and Covington are only a couple of hours away!

Can anywhere be as bad as Hawaii? I think it gets a pass because, well... it's Hawaii. But terrible awful selection out there. (At least on Maui)

I go to Windsor once or twice a year and always find something at the LCBO to bring back. Every once in a while I find something that would otherwise have to be FedExed from the UK. American whiskey is high there but the real killer is the duty coming into Canada. It very much limits purchases at duty free in Detroit. We usually load up on the way back to the US but duty free doesn't always have the same bottles in Windsor as Detroit!

I wish I was a Vodka fan...... I'd have 27,000 brands to choose from.
Be careful what you wish for.

Then be double thankful you don't live in Australia!! If I use your list, it would look like this:

    Beam White $34 (700ml bottle, 37.5% abv)
    WT 80 Not available
    Bulleit $42
    BT $50 (700ml bottle, 40% abv)
    EC12 $65
    Corner Creek not available
    Knob Creek not available

    Other prices from our market:

    Bookers $89
Blantons Brown Label Private Reserve $65
    Eagle Rare 10yo $70
Black Cherry (Red Stag) $35 (700ml bottle, 30% abv)
    Makers Mark $40 (700ml blttle, 40% abv)
    Rare Breed $70
    Woodford Reserve $60

So, Australia officially gets my vote as the COUNTRY of Bourbon Hell

For the record: I like a few cocktails made with vodka, but I don't really drink it.

I am amazed at the variety of vodka that is on the shelves in any liquor store I go into. I am also amazed at the scarcity of whisk(e)y on the shelves, in comparison.

Can someone tell me why there is so much Bourbon, Scotch, Irish and other whisk(e)y available, but we can't/aren't allowed to get it in Ohio?

I also have no "issue" with Vodka, and have been known to put away a Vodka Collins or 6 while grilling.

But what I don't get is, much like you, why there are SO MANY, and why stores seem to insist on stocking so many Vodka products, and yet always seem to have limited space for their bourbon.

I mean really, how much difference is there between Stoli and Grey Goose and Absolut and whatever else is considered a "premium" vodka?

Can't even begin to try and figure the States when it comes to who will/won't import what. There seems to be so little rhyme or reason to any of it.
