I got the following email from Mark Gillespie a few days ago:
I just found out that I'll be able to come out for the race this weekend, and since I still haven't done this month's Virtual Tastings episode yet, I thought I'd see if you guys would like to get together and be part of the panel?
Tried to reach Denis at the Vine & Table, but he's away until tomorrow and it might be fun to do it there if he and his managers are up for it, but we can always find another venue to record it as as well. I'd love to have him be the third guy on the panel, too...but won't be able to work that out until tomorrow at the earliest.
We met today for the tasting. We weren't informed beforehand what we'd be sampling as Mark provided the whisk(e)y.
Denis, the spirits manager at V&T, was unable to participate so Chris and I asked Tom Helt to step in his place.
Mark is a really nice guy and it was a pleasure meeting him.
We set up in Chris's bar (very nice) and tried four different samples. In order, they included:
- Green Spot Irish Whiskey (Pure Pot Still)
- Crown Royal XR
- Amrut Portonova
- Ardbeg Day (feel free to be jealous, hehe)
ALL the pours were excellent. The Green Spot is one of my all-time favorite Irish Whiskies, if not the favorite. The Crown Royal XR was so creamy and buttery. A DANGEROUS whiskey that drinks as easy as water. The Amrut Portonova was a cinnamon spice bomb up front that showed some subtle fruity notes on exit. Very hot on the front of the palate, but in a good way, like red hots. And the Ardbeg Day was exceptional. A perfect balance of peat and sherry. I really need to get a bottle of this. One of the best Ardbeg's I've ever had.
We had such a blast! Can't wait to hear the episode once it's uploaded. I'll be sure to let everyone know when it's available to download.
