Ok, somebody explain how this works. I was at the Miami airport today and saw an interesting "duty free" shop. Some of the prices were really good. If I were to buy something, how do I bring it home on my flight back to Ky?

I'm fairly certain that duty free stores in US airports will only sell merchandise to travelers heading out of the US (they check your boarding pass).
I also believe that is correct.
I thought it was inbound or outbound, but I'm certain that they check to see that you left or are leaving the country.
This is true. So you have to buy the booze as you're leaving the country, but that doesn't mean you can't still be in possession of it when you return. I would ask somebody at the airport if you keep the merchandise sealed in the original duty-free bag, will they allow it beyond security on your way back. If you can't get a good answer, just pack it in your luggage (carefully) on your way back home.
