I'm starting this thread simply to get to the next one. Scrolling down, I noticed that there are (were, now ) 666 threads on this Dark Side Whiskey forum. Figgers, don't it?
Plus, I enjoyed that Ardbeg Alligator way too much at the Gazebo over the weekend. I just don't like the direction this is taking...

I get the Heebeegeebees reading Driscoll's blog and another report on Tuesday that liquor companies are again notifying of increasing price changes. One I've noticed lately is Aberlour A'bunadh . We're not talking just a few dollars either.

That's right, and I have already stopped. I bought Glenlivet 15 year old French Oak recently on sale for under $50.00 at LCBO. Rarely have I had a better malt at any price. It is beautifully balanced and flavorful, and the French wood taste (I see now where Cognac gets its signature) comes through without traducing the flavour of Highland whisky. It is far better than the standard 12 year old version. No more $100 and $200 purchases for something too old, too peaty (although I know some people like that), too sherried, or too ordinary. And bourbon has its no-go analogues.

Squire I am saying the same thing in that I find few malt whiskies - looking at those for a minute - really worth more than $50.00 or $60.00. I had a 25 year old Highland Park the other day that wasn't nearly as good IMO as the 18, and the 18, while excellent, didn't trump by far if at all the Glenlivet 15. (I also had a sherried Glenlivet 18 recently that was superb, it cost somewhat more than the 15 of the same house but not nearly as much as the vaunted Macallan 18). They don't all taste the same but the differences are small after the top range mentioned IMO. Not only that, many of those Cadillac whiskies actually taste not as good to me as the kinds of good value malts I mentioned.

I really have taken notice with the A'bunadh also I used to pick these up all the time in the 50'ish range and now they are right at $70,I have noticed slight increases in other malts but not at such an extreme percentage.
