What bourbon are you drinking? Winter 12/13

I picked up a bottle of EWSB '03 yesterday. This stuff in fan-freaking-tastic. By far the best EWSB I've had since Binny's '00, which I plan to revisit soon. This '03 is also a Binny's barrel and it's labeled as #2.

My palate is pretty accustomed to the higher proof spectrum of bourbons, and though this guy is a lightweight in proof, the flavor is anything but lacking. Yes, it's a little thin, but certainly not for its proof, and certainly not for $29.

Lots of vanilla caramel supporting honeyed nuts. The grassy side of HH makes an appearance, of course, but it's very well balanced by a clear rock sugar that drives a lot of the sweetness I'm getting; it's the kind of sweetness I appreciate in a bourbon, where it's not cloying and/or overly sweet.

Chicago guys, I haven't had any other barrels from this vintage, but I recommend without hesitation you pick up a #2 if you see it in the shelf.

We will have to compare this to my Binny's #7 which continues, 1/3 of my way into it, other than its nose, on the meh path. I remedied the meh with small pours of several 4R bottling recipes and an OWA SB...the latter tasting so good tonight, it's having me think it might be worth paying the price tomorrow, and having one more slightly larger OWA pour .

I am taking a trip through my soon to be finished bottles of EC12 and Weller 12. May open up a I.W. Harper 80 if there are detours on the trip route...

2005 OFBB. This is so good, I may have to go pick up the last 8 bottles on the shelf, and start a bunker.

Began with a Weller 12 and finishing with some Willett Pot Still. Ironically I bought it for the bottle more than the bourbon, but finding it surprisingly nice this evening! More chewy and sweet than I recall - maybe the W12 was the starter I needed (or this is a particularly nice barrel). Have to try this a few more times to decide for sure.

EWSB 02 last night, looking forward to the 03. Third bottle of the 02 in the last three months, all different barrels, and all have been great.

Now, time to go move some snow.

As a lark I made up two identical cocktails at lunch one using Benchmark and the other Evan W. black label. Couldn't tell any taste difference between them.
