What bourbon are you drinking? Winter 12/13

A fistful of Eagle Rare with two cubes. I find less is more when it comes to ice with my bourbon. There are some bourbons I only drink neat, but if it is less than top shelf a little ice works better than packing out the glass with cubes.

As a lark I made up two identical cocktails at lunch one using Benchmark and the other Evan W. black label. Couldn't tell any taste difference between them.

No kidding? What kind of cocktail, something more flavor-heavy than an old fashioned, I assume?

I would have guessed the Benchmark would have quite a rye spice flavor compared to the EWB... but maybe the lower proof allows it to be hidden behind the rest of the cocktail.

Benchmark packs alot of flavor in this 80 proofer. Don't know what BT is shooting for in this brand but the expression I have is certainly above entry level.

Oh, the cocktails were whisky, triple sec and ginger ale which I chose to help accent the rye element.

Agreed on the Benchmark. I've only had one (family sized) bottle of it last summer, but was generally impressed considering the price point.... and dorky plastic bottle. It's not very 'enlightened' of me, but I probably would have bought it again once or twice since, if not for that plastic bottle.

Do they only sell the 'family sized' bottles near you? Around these parts the big bottle is plastic, but the 750ml bottle is glass. I guess they figure that the bigger bottle will need to take more abuse?

Yeah, only option is the handle for about $15. It's the only plastic jobber I've seen, at least of any bourbons I'd be interested in (maybe some of those generic-brand types have plastic, but I haven't noticed).
