Funny you mention that. I plan on visiting ETown tomorrow. I could bring the Hakushu 12 yr with me. I taste a little peat in it myself. I think It will last a long time in my house. Not sure if you had tried it yet.

That's a very generous offer Eric, I wish other merchants would follow your example.

I have always meant to open up a premium bottle after I purchase it and share with some of the merchants I frequent. But this year, it looks like most merchant I've talk with aren't very happy about selling the premiums like its more a hassle. Then the friendly ones are usually ones that overcharge and I can't buy. Pre-09, most of them were very friendly.

Eric's strategy is the best. I would do my purchase there.

Years ago I had some samplings at a merchant and met Tom Bulliet which was a nice experience and listened to his story.

For a purchase, sometimes it's a long drive and I want to sample it to see if I want to buy more than one and would like to share with the merchant but couldn't seem to feel right doing it now a days.

Perhaps getting an unexpected sample will brighten the mood of the merchant and buy you more friendly treatment the next time a premium bottling comes around?

I'd like to do this as well, there are a few folks in liquor stores around here who are always very helpful and would probably appreciate a pour, but that's a no-no in Utah.

It doesn't take me very long to figure out the merchant I would share with and the merchant I will probably not take my business back to in the future. I don't mind sharing a pour if I know I'm going to open it. If it's a hard to find and I pay a little over retail then it's probably going to sit a while in my cabinet and that will have to just be shared at some later date. It is always nice to enjoy a bourbon with someone else who appreciates it as well. There are a lot of merchants who couldn't tell you the first thing about bourbon. Those are the one's who are typically chasing the Pappy Profit, doubling the price on rare bottles and not getting a pour from me. Eric creates an environment at his store similar to the old days when you could share conversation, not be rushed to buy something and look forward to returning. That's a great approach to customers who don't like being hassled. A lot of other folks in our area could follow that model. Just my thoughts.

Thanks Jim for adding your thoughts.

I stopped into Eric's store for a minute while meandering around Kentucky on Sunday after the Sampler. My suitcase was already (too) full, so I couldn't buy anything, but it seemed like a great place, very well stocked on both bourbon and beer, and I'll make sure to stop there earlier in my trip next time.

I'm sampling a couple of Kahn's SB OWA. One is a bit more woody, the other a little sweeter. Together, they're very good!
It was pretty good, but I preferred the OWA on its own, as well as the Berheim. The mix was a little too sweet with some of the oak and leather notes I like in OWA a little too subdued.
