Re: What Rye Are You Drinking? Spring 2013

God I love that Hirsch 22. Saving my last bottle. Right now I'm into a bottle of Very Olde St. Nick (NAS) I had shipped from Japan. I'd love to know what is in it. It to me doesn't taste exactly like LDI rye, but maybe it's just a bit older? Very reminiscent of Jeff 10, actually (though that's canadian). Either way it is quite good an well worth the $35 I paid...probably not worth the shipping. Unlike what I hear about the older versions, it's not a bit over-wooded.

Dark and brooding, with a nose that wants to defy that its a whiskey, I always think ultra old rum with it. Thickly pouring from the bottle in to the glass.

Sweet, rich flavor, little/no hit of alcohol, completely tamed by the barrel over the years, lingering taste. Sticks with you for hours after finishing.

In the empty glass, long legs clinging all around the glass, the type when you have to let them settle, because you can get another small taste from them as the pool. Too good to waste.

Its one of those items that I'm really blessed to have had the opportunity to pick up and enjoy, and share with others! Such a unique creature.

Very nice notes, Brent. Thanks for sharing.

That sounds like a proper session! How is the Hirsch 21, esp. in comparison to the Hirsch 22? I've never managed to get my beak in a pour of the Hirsch 21, would love to know your impressions.

Chris and I tasted through all of the Hirsch Rye expressions, here are my notes.

A solo pour of WTR101 - this just gets better as the bottle empties.

Last night started with Old Overholt, then Beam Rye with old label, baby saz, wt101 rye, and finally the willet 5yr single barrel rye. The willet reigned supreme.
    Bourbon only requires a glass.

I tried Knob Creek rye for the first time. It is definitely the most "bourbon-like" rye I have had. It was good but I much prefer Sazerac or Willet 5 year old because of the full rye flavor. I did switch gears with the Knob Creek rye and put it in a perfect Manhattan. That is how the rest of the bottle is going to go away. It was very good in that capacity.
