Re: What beer are you drinking, Spring 2013

It's very possible that I had one or two more than I should've. Ten of us (including Uncle Bunk) worked our way through these bottles last night at my second annual barrel-aged beer tasting.

Clown Shoes Luchador En Fuego (barrel-aged chocolate imperial stout with Ancho chili powder, vanilla extract, cinnamon and chipotle peppers)
Port Brewing Santa's Little Helper (barrel-aged imperial stout)

That sure was a great time, Steve. I too probably had one or two more than I needed judging by the big head I woke up with this morning, but it sure was worth it. There were too many killer beers in that line-up to pick a true favorite (and I happened to select the one dud that was universally panned by the group when it came to be my turn to grab a beer from the cooler) but the one that sticks out most in my (foggy) mind is probably Revolution's Straight Jacket Barleywine. That one's a real beauty and I feel fortunate to have such a fine micro right here in Chicago. Thanks again and see you soon at my house for a beer and bourbon blow-out!

I've really enjoyed all five of the Revolution barrel-aged beers that I've had -- glad we got to work through three of them last night. Needless to say I'm also excited to see where Pipeworks goes with their new barreling program.

My best in show was the Bourbon County Cherry Rye, unsurprisingly -- combines several of my favorite things. Most pleasant surprise was how well the IIPA in Doom stood up to the barrel.

I think our eclectic selection showed again just how many different outcomes you can get through the combination of a beer, a barrel and some time.

Sounds like a great time, gents. Well done!! Can I come next time?

For me, it's Balashi by the buckets, in Aruba. Decent "Island type" beer, that you would expect from the islands. On the beach, and very cold, it's dang good.

I spent the last few days with some friends up in northern WI and drank a lot of New Glarus Spotted Cow, Moon Man, and IIPA. One my MN friends also brought my favorite IPA: Surly Furious.

Stone Imperial Stout paired with a nice big juicy ribeye fresh off the grill, now I'm just waiting for somebody to come by and harpoon my ass and put me out of my misery! No complaints though, none at all.

Visited the Holy Grales barrel aged beer fest. Some very good beers and some other not so good but interesting beers were enjoyed.

Peated whiskey barrels and beer are not a good match.

The Hof ten Dormaal barrel aged cognac and sauterne were excellent.

GLB Lake Erie Monster heavy hops heavy malt and high alcohol. Tart and sweet in the same drink and a finish that lingers.

I think I'll need another 4 pack of this.

Hell or High Watermelon. Toasty today here before the rain so I wanted something light. OK but not anything I will likely look for again.
