    BOTM 5/13: Wathen's

Thanks to a suggestion from a fellow member, we're gonna switch gears once again, and go with a BOTM that is a little more nondescript this time. Wathen's

No comment from me at all this time, as I have yet to buy or taste this one at all. Bet y'all are relieved.

Post way! Let's hear it for Wathen's.

    Cheers! Joe

PS. Yes I'm early again. I wouldn't hold your breath for next month though.

Gotta say, Wathens was one of my standbys.

Its a fine "table bourbon". 8 year single barrel, nothing wrong with that.

It's pretty good stuff. I didn't think it was better than EC12, Weller 12 or 4RSmB, which is in the same price range, but I certainly wouldn't mind another glass of it right now.

Depends on your definition of "makes".

Tucker, any producer can sell a whisky but only a distiller can make it.

I had a bottle of this 2-3 years ago. It was not bad but not very interesting either. It's not sold here but I saw plenty on the shelves in Ketucky. I didn't pick any up. I spent my money on handles of VOB BiB, Heaven Hill White Label BiB and AAA 10 y/o among other things.

I'm familiar with the original Wathen's put out by Charles Medley using whisky he made while serving as the Master Distiller for Glenmore but I understand those stocks were depleted over a decade ago. I don't know to what extent the Medley family is involved with the current brand but since they are no longer making whisky it must be sourced. I was figuring Heaven Hill.

Wathen's is one of my favorite bourbons. Has a nice following here in central Ky. Probably Heaven Hill but that isn't necessarily bad. I find some similarity between it and Henry McKenna (which I also like). A nice pour when looking for something other than one of the big boys (even if one of the big boys made it!).
