Bulliet Bourbon

I saw Bulliet "American Frontier" Bourbon in a store today for the first time. It was about $20 a bottle (cool looking), and sitting next to Maker's Mark, which made me a little suspicious.

Is this stuff any good? Have any of you learned Bourbon lovers ever tried it?

Jeff did a tasting on it here. I've had it and it is not that bad a bourbon for the price (unless it is well over $20 now). It did have an almost medicinal taste as we discussed in that thread, but still it is a decent bourbon.

In case you were running a search on it here and didn't come up with much it may be because of the spelling. It is spelt Bulleit.

I sampled it with bobbyc back in May at the Talbot and we both ended up buying a bottle later.

It is a decent bourbon that is probably not worth $20, but it is something interesting. Its most appealing traits are that it's something a little different, it has a family story behind it (which I can't remember right now), and it has an unusual bottle. In other words, something to try, but not something to buy if you have limited funds or if you haven't explored the many other fine sub-$20 bourbons mentioned here at SB.com.

I have a bottle I got years ago - it was OK but not great. The kind of Bourbon you would buy just to fill a spot in the colection maybe, but there were about a 1/2 dozen I could name for the same money that were better. It was kind of MIA for a while but is now back in production with a different bottle than I have and a slightly better formulation. If you are buying to add to a collection ( and I mean a DRINKING collection ) it is not a bad example of a rather simple style - but if you are looking for something to drink and enjoy - buy a bottle of Elijah Craig 12 Year old or a bottle of Elmer T. Lee single barrel. They cost about the same money and are better and more interesting bourbons

We're not huge fans, but if you're a Bulleit fan living in or near Maryland, I recently found it on sale for $11.00 in Rockville. Also, am I recalling correctly that a few years back the bottle and label were what I can only describe as the opposite of it's current ones? A squarish bottle with a very modern look to it? Was the bourbon different, too?

Old Bulleit was in something that looked like a cologne bottle, was made by Buffalo Trace, and promoted itself as "Engineered Bourbon" due to it being aged in heated warehouses. New Bulleit is in what is supposed to resemble a patent medicine bottle, is made by Four Roses, and is promoted as "Frontier Bourbon."
