2011 Schlafly Reserve Imperial Stout aged in bourbon barrels. Pretty rich stuff.

Some kind soul left a Flying Dog "Raging Bitch" Belgian IPA in my cooler at the "KBF pre-cookout, GN-West Wing, beer, bourbon, booze, and BS " event on Saturday. Totally diggin' this beer tonight. Thank you, Kind Soul!

I had one of the best IPAs I've ever tired at the Sampler this year, a Double Crooked Tree. I searched high and low (drinking plenty of other amazing beers in the process) and finally found some in Frankfort during the KBF. Poured the first of my stash this evening and it's as good as I remember.

The Double Crooked Tree is a pretty good beer, but around here you never know what to expect since they don't bottle date the stuff (unless that's changed recently). I try not to buy anything hoppy that isn't dated.

I've had a few IPA style beers that aged well, but they have to be 10% at least. Kind of like old Islay scotch that loses it's peaty and smoky roar, but develops something more fruity and delicate. I had an Avery Maharaja that was probably 18 months old last month and thought it was amazing.

With that said, I didn't see any bottling information anywhere. I got them at Red Dot and if the scarcity around the rest of the stores that I shopped means anything I would assume these haven't been sitting on the shelves (at retailers anyway) for very long.

Double crooked tree is great for aging. A huge malt backbone makes it stand up to time. You can tell the 2013 (which was released in January) because it is only 12% while previous years have been 14% abv.

I agree that dates are important but some people take it to the extreme just like they do here with bourbon.

An Ahyan OX muled some of my favorite beers to me at KBF. Savoring the Great Lakes Dortmunder Gold, tonight. Luv me some Great Lakes brews.

It's not Bo and Luke, but I'm drinking an Anderson Valley Bourbon Barrel Stout.

Avery Twentieth Anniversary IPA… very nice pour with lots of pine and citrus, notes of pear up front, then a mildly bitter finish.
