Re: Weller 12 flying off the shelves?

Well, I didn't want to sound like a broken record, but I don't get it either. The current stuff is my least favorite bourbon. The old stuff is a completely different story...

I agree it would be interesting to try some single barrel selections. I bet some gems could be found.
I've never tried GTS with any sort of soda. Maybe I'm missing out; but I'm OK with that.

Re: Weller 12 flying off the shelves?

Since I haven't had the older version, I can only compare it to other available options in today's marketplace. It is a solid pour at a reasonable price. I don't know if they can replicate the flavor with younger bourbon or not but, in the end, I would expect the age statement to go away and the price to go up. I like it well enough at the current price to have bunkered away a few bottles.

As for why it is flying off the shelves, I think that has more to do with availability and allocation issues. When you start seeing something you like become more scarce and, then when it returns, a little more expensive, you consider buying it while you can. It doesn't help when reputable stores either tell you they are out and don't when they will get more or that it is becoming harder to get.

I expect more than a few stores are pushing W12 as 'the other Pappy'.

Oh man, don't you know it! I have seen stores push both W12 and OWA as the same thing as pappy but for a third of the cost. Assuming you can buy pappy at MSRP.

I heard the same thing when touring the BT distillery last summer.

I've seen other web sites touting it as the next best thing to Pappy if you can't get the PVW, or proclaiming the OWA/W12 SB blend as a substitute. I suspect that has something to do with the popularity in certain quarters. We simply don't get it around here. OWA and the Weller SR, but I've never seen Weller 12 on a shelf. The one bottle I've been able to lay my hands on went immediately into an SB blend (which I really like after it was vatted a few weeks), and I'll admit I haven't even tried the unused portion yet.

The SB blend is popping up all over the 'net now as "Poor Man's Pappy" or my favorite "Trailer Park Pappy". Complete with blending tips and guidelines. But I still don't get the comparison to 15/107. That seems to be the target expression but approximating the 10/107 combining a 12 yr 90 and a 5/6 year 107 makes for a better comparison IMO. In other words the SB blend is poor man's Old Rip.

They did, then they sold it all, now they can't get any more. Chicago is on a Weller rations.
    Bourbon only requires a glass.

Saw a bunch in Chicago this past weekend. Even a handle of it to boot. It was a little higher priced than I've bought for previously, but not outrageous.

The same store had two bottles of Michter's Celebration LE and a Hirsch humidor. As you can imagine, I don't think they will be finding a new home anytime soon.
