So my favorite Bourbon so far is Bulleit Frontier Whiskey. Granted ...

my list of Bourbons I have sampled is very small. They are, in order of preference, as follows:

    1. Bulleit Frontier Whiskey
    2. Wild Turkey Rare Breed
    3. Wild Turkey 101
    4. Jim Beam Black Label
    4. Woodford Reserve (tied with JBB, but price puts WR a little below JB Black)
    6. Maker's Mark
    7. Wild Turkey 81

Here's my question - given my preferences above, what should be my next Bourbon purchase? I'm heading to the liquor store tomorrow (a liquor store with a great selection) and I've decided to buy two bottles (750 ml) of new Bourbon I have never tried before. I've had Old Grand Dad 114 recommended to me and will probably make that one of my purchases.

What should be my second one? Thanks in advance.

Go buy some Four Roses. Small Batch, Single Barrel, a barrel proof private selection... All good choices. Bulleit is sourced from Four Roses.

looks like you like the higher rye bourbons, OGD is a great choice, but maybe you could also try a straight rye like Rittenhouse BIB or Baby Saz!

Took your advice and bought some Four Roses, Small Batch. Really, really, liked it. I am sure my future will have some experimentations of various Four Roses Single Barrel concoctions as my new favorite liquor store (Market Square, Tallahassee) has an amazing selection of Four Roses Bourbon. And I do mean amazing.

Like Jim Beam Black? Try out Knob Creek! That one is at the top of my list as well as Wild Turkey 101 and Jim Beam Black. I am not too keen on the higher rye bourbons like Bulleit, but love, love Four Roses Single Barrel. So don't ignore that recommendation from others, either.

Although I don't doubt that you get more rye flavors in the Bulleit, the FRSB has at least as much rye in its mashbill as the Bulleit, if not more. Assuming FR is still supplying Bulleit anyway.

Its not necessarily the rye flavor - I love spice - but I am not too keen on the cola, minty, licorice flavors. I still enjoy them from time to time but I find FRSB to much more rounded in that respect. Bulleit and FRSmB smells like flat cola to me.

Knob Creek is on my short list. And I am not throwing out any recommendations. One that I've tried that I've gotten many recommendations for is Old Granddad 114. And I have to say that I did not enjoy my first attempt. Possibly because it's the highest proof I've had to date and I'm just not ready for it. My taste buds couldn't seem to get past the alcohol burn.

HOWever, I am not a quitter! I have kept it in the rotation and will be giving it another serious try over the weekend.

I too find OGD114 a bit hot, but my biggest issue with OGD is, like Bulleit, it has those cola, root beer, licorice flavors. It acts much like a rye whiskey does.

I like OGD100 instead. Just a nice spicy kick in the teeth. Not as flavorful as 114, though.
