Re: What Wee Dram Are You Enjoying Now - Fall 2013/Winter 2014

Glenfiddich Malt Master's Edition. I've never really warmed to Glenfiddich. I find the pear-like profile - the company uses the term in its ads, accurately - or what can come across as an appley note, off-putting. However, the Malt Master's Edition is outstanding. Everything combines - distillery character with peat notes forward, American oak, sherry wood - to a rich satisfying whole. Silky soft on the palate too. Best Glenfiddich I ever had. I tasted recently as well the current 15 year old, which is very good, but this other (12 years old, whisky successively aged in reused bourbon and sherry oak) is better IMO.

I've found both the 12 ans 17 to be standard, but both excellent as well.

Yep, want to try the 17 sometime in the coming year....back to the 12 again tonight. After being open a couple of days, seems to be a slight increase in the overall depth...warrants more taste tests.

It's a hard job, but we're all grateful that you're willing to do the work. The 17 is a true step up...and I don't always say that with greater age as 12-15 is generally my wheelhouse. It's very good. Hi Time had a 375ml sample pack of both for $39.99 last year. I wish I would have bought an extra...

Tonight it's Dalwhinnie in my new Glencairn Canadian glass.
Not completely sold on the glass but the whisky sure is nice, always have liked Dalwhinnie.

    Slainte!

A sign of things to come? The Talisker Storm, a NAS vatted malt creation by one of the ever benevolent whisky dark overlords, was just anointed as the Highlands/Islands Single malt of the year over at Whisky Advocate.

That said, I do rather enjoy it despite the ever increasing cost.
That yella whiskey runnin' down my throat like honey dew vine water and I took another slash…

Yup, vanilla wafers and white icing. Very sweet but far from cloying. A very nice Irish pour.
Got to get some of this after New Years....doesn't seem likely it's going to make its way into the dirty ole South...time to go online,

Before my wife and I meet some friends for dinner, I am having some Tullamore Dew 10 Yr Reserve on the rocks. I really love the Tullamore Dew line--the basic blend, the 10 Year Reserve (I believe since discontinued), and the 12 Year Reserve. I haven't had the 10 Year Single Malt, and I have an unopened bottle of the new Phoenix.
