Ya know, Ive never tried that one yet. I do like sweet, and I do like 100 proof, and I do like young stuff over old stuff. I've also said my next purchase was gonna be Dickel 12, and since that and MC are both over 80% (from what i've read) corn, they ought to be somewhat along similar lines. Whoever has had both....how do you compare them from your experience?

Nice pour of some Larceny/OWA (50/50) blend I had pretty much forgotten about. Doesn't replace the SB Blend in the least, but I do appreciate the differences. The Larceny makes it somewhat brighter/sharper, although for some reason the finish is quite abrupt (to the point of being rude about it). Not a blend I'll make again, but not one I'm dumping as a mistake either

gimme an idea what to expect, Squire. While I doubt the MC will compare to D12 much more than the mashbill, maybe the MC would be more similar to the Dickel Cascade Hollow?

Channeling my inner Leroy Jethro Gibbs this afternoon. Woodworking in the basement. Sipping on WTRB. Getting lots of oak though, frankly, the oak probably came from the wood rather than the bourbon. Switched to VOB. Mmmm! Loving the VOB even more than the RB. Only about half a handle left. Got to nurse it along until we head south after Christmas.

I've had both but like squire implied... not really comparable, totally different profiles. Mellow corn is on the mellower side and tastes of corn. Ha! Who'd have thought, right?! Doesn't have nearly as much going on as the Dickel 12 (to my palate, anyway) but I like it for its simplicity as that's sometimes all I'm in the mood for. Plus, it's $10 or so per bottle. I would choose it neat over anything else I've had at that price, which really is only stuff like EW Black or various generic store-brand whiskeys.

Re: What bourbon are you drinking - Fall 2013

Ok Doug, I'll give it a shot. Mellow Corn is a lighter style of Bourbon, simple, clean, aged in second use barrels which impart less of the vanilla, oak, spice we expect in a rye recipe Bourbon that has been aged in new casks. A good mixer and the BIB is a bargain.

Tennessee whiskys, Daniels and Dickel, are so distinctive in style it's useless to put them in a blind tasting because they are so easily identifiable. New make Tennessee whisky is run through a 10 foot deep vat of charcoal (the Lincoln County process) before being aged in new charred barrels. The charcoal filtering produces a lighter, smoother product by stripping out various vegetable fats and oils, along with some other elements (congeners) such as esters, acids, aldehydes found in higher alcohols, and some other stuff I don't remember. Originally a moonshiners trick to clean up the whisky it also gives a head start on aging if you plan to lay down some barrels. Anyway, it produces a distinctive taste which one either likes or one doesn't. Of course if you're going to mix it with Coke or ginger ale that distinctiveness is largely lost.

There is a prevailing school of thought that Tennessee whiskys produce less of a hangover and there well may be some truth in that.

Having some FRSmB LE 2012 right now. Eyeballing the 125th on the shelf, thinking about adding some to the 2012, just a small vatting in my glass after a few more sips
