Re: What Bourbon Did You Purchase Today? Fall 2013

Stopped by one of my local stores today. One of the owners had been telling me about a 4R barrel pick that was on the way. I thought it would be the traditional OBSV 100 proof but to my surprise it was a Private Selection OESQ at 118 proof. Had a chance to sample and was quite impressed. Just another reason why I'm a big 4R fan.

I normally start with a glass but with that haul I might be tempted to tilt a bottle.

I hope more stores around here start doing barrel proof picks of the different recipes. Nothing against 100 proof (because they're still lovely whiskies, and a more affordable price-point), but I love the flexibility of diluting my own.

Yes, there's a certain amount of comfort to be derived from holding an unopened bottle of barrel proof goods.

Funny how that stuff gets found when the price goes up.

After trying (and falling in love) with the PHC, I added two more to the bunker. I would have added more, but my wallet would not have liked that. Also bought EHT single barrel and Bernheim, both first time purchases for me. The EHT SB is fantastic, first time I ever tried any of the EHT, but I'm still not sure if it worth the price. Compared the Bernheim with Larceny, and the Bernheim had a better more viscous mouthfeel, but seemed more one dimensional on the palate.

You do know that the Bernheim is a wheat whiskey, while the Larceny is a wheater bourbon?

Nothing fancy but I did have a mini-haul of bourbon and rye at a local discount liquor store: Dickel No. 12 ($15), Dickel Rye ($15), Jefferson's Reserve Straight Rye ($35), Bulleit Rye ($23), OGD 114 ($21) and Larceny Bourbon ($20). I should have grabbed the EC 12 too while I was at it but had to save a little dough for Irish whiskey and scotch. All in all, I was very pleased with my purchases, particularly at those prices.

is dickel rye actually made by dickel, or sourced like everyone elses seems to be?
