    Michter's Deal, Your Opinion?

A local store has a "bourbon of the month" special each month. This month it is Michter's toasted oak finish bourbon, small batch bourbon, or rye for $33. I have not had any of them. Is this a good price and do you recommend any of the varieties?

I don't have a ton of love for Michter's in general, but I would jump on the toasted oak for $33 to try it. I've yet to hear worse than mediocre reviews of it, and have read some great ones. The rye is solid, though I prefer Rittenhouse. The small batch bourbon, eh. Maybe for $25.

I do like Michter's bourbon, and have a bottle of the Toasted Barrel Finish. I like it quite a bit. It's not extraordinary, but it's certainly well worth $33.

$33 is a lot cheaper than what the PA state stores charge, but then again, everything is expensive in the state stores. As for the actual whiskey, I enjoy Michter's now and then (If you know me, you know I'm partial to the name for very specific reasons....) but I feel it is a bit too expensive for what you're getting. My favorite is their Original Sour Mash, which was meant to mimic the blessed, heavenly juice that came from right here in PA from the Bomberger Distillery in Schaefferstown.
If you have anything Michter's or Pennco and would like to sell it or share it with me, please let me know.

The Toasted Oak was a disappointment and discovered that they pulled a formula on their COLA application for that product, which means that they can add up to 2 1/2 percent color, flavorings and additives. Technically speaking its not even whisky but a Distilled Spirit Specialty. The rest of their products under $100.00 are just ok. I agree with others that I find the Sour Mash interesting and the American Blended Whiskey also interesting. However, I will not probably go out of my way to own any in the near future.
