My first taste of Brooklyn Black Ops. Wonderful notes of chocolate, malts and bourbon. Definitely good stuff.

Having a delicious Epic Barley Wine, at the brewery in their six seater restaurant that the bartender just described as a "loophole."

Love it! A "loophole". American Ingenuity!

Relaxing with a Great Lakes Christmas Ale, while watching Littlesmokinjoe and Mrssmokinjoe wrap Christmas presents. I really like the GL beers, and the CA is stellar.

Started early with a Bo Co Barleywine and Coffee Stout and I can honestly say the Barleywine is the star of the show for me this year, excluding the rares and it's going to be a long enjoyable night!I have no idea when I will rise from the coffin tomorrow though.

First go around with some Ballast Point Sculpin IPA. Tasty but fruitier than I'm used to, a little apricot along with the citrus.

If persuaded you might want to try the Dorado from BP as I also find it to be a rather stellar beer as well in their house style as another variant.

American ingenuity at its best. I'm back at Epic again today in between last-minute Christmas shopping stops. Thought I'd post a pic of the beer menu.

And now for some of the vagueries of Utah liquor law. There are three different on-premise licenses. A tavern license allows for serving "Utah Beer" - that is, beer at or below 4% ABV. That's useless for Epic because they don't make "Utah Beer." In order to sell real beer there are restaurant licenses and bar licenses.

Epic's restaurant license dictates that 70% of their revenue must come from food sales and each drinker must buy an entrée. They don't want the food to be expensive because they want to provide samples. The most expensive menu item is $8. So here's the loophole.

There are six seats in the restaurant. In the spring and fall there's a dozen more outside but in winter that is impossible and in summer sitting out there sucks. There are a lot of brewery employees. The employees all are fed by the brewery with food purchased from the restaurant. And the beer prices are as shown.

If any of y'all are ever in Salt Lake, this place is a must stop.
    Jim
