Re: Foreign Whisky of the Month - 12/2013: Lagavulin

I haven't had a pour of this in a while. I'll have to delve back into it when the weather actually gets colder, supposedly tomorrow.

In the meantime I thought this was in order

Man, another peaty scotch for FWoM, you guys are killing me! I did get a 200ml of the Lag 16 with my 3 pack so I'll pop that open as soon as I'm done with my current business trip.

Still, even though I really enjoy the sweeter whiskeys my wife has been loving my purchasing habits as of late. She even asked me why I had so many new peaty bottles... I blamed the forums

I view she likes it as a green light to buy more.

Oh I have. In the last two weeks I've purchased Talisker 25, Octomore 2.1 and Ardbeg Uigeadail. I'm also hitting up the SoCal Bevmo and Total Wines today in pursuit of more bottles at much cheaper prices. Then on Friday I'm making a K&L trip

Yes, yes, frugality and moderation, with permission though I'll continue to vicariously enjoy the adventures of you lot.

You've obviously never hit The Whisky Exchange website from the comfort of your own lounge chair!

That said, I also have a special fondness for the 16 as it the bottle that really got me into this whole whisky thing. I can still remember how nervous and exhilarated I felt back in the day when I purchased my first Lagavulin 16, dropping $60 on a single bottle - it was by far my most expensive purchase to date.
Pretty much the same story for me but it was a Laphroaig 10, I must of just turned 18 and had been reading a bunch of novels where the protagonist almost exclusively drinks Laph, I saved up the $60 or so from my part time job and felt really quite classy handing over that money, asking for Laphroaig after having practised the pronunciation in my car a few times beforehand! my parents werent very impressed when I got home though...

Re: Foreign Whisky of the Month - 12/2013: Lagavulin

Lagavulin 16 is hit and miss with me. The first bottle I had took me close to 10 years to drink (wasn't much of a whisky drinker back then). Still, even today, there is something I can't put my finger on that puts me off a bit unless the mood is just right. The funny thing is I love Laphroaig 10, so there is something unique to the Lagavulin phenolics that doesn't hit me quite right. I still occasionally enjoy the 16 but it is usually when I'm outside by the fire pit or otherwise distracted ...!

The DE however I love - the PX sherry adds that extra element that balances out the phenolic element in the 16 that I can't quite identify. Lagavulin DE, like the Bowmore 15 Darkest, seems to balance out those peaty phenolic elements enough not to cover them over but to add enough contrast to keep them from being overwhelming.

For those of you who are experienced Islay lovers, I'd love to know what you think distinguishes the Laphroaig profile from the Lagavulin - I'd love to put words to what I'm tasting but just can't seem to identify it. The medicinal element in the Laphroaig, even at a younger age, seems more balanced to me than what it is I'm tasting in the Lagavulin 16.
