What I love about JBW is that no matter where you are you can always count on even the most poorly stocked bar having it and its always consistant.

Re: BOTM 6/14: Jim Beam White

JBW is not something that I want to drink when I'm in any sort of contemplative mood, but I have yet to see a similar low proofer that "stands up" to ice so well. It amazingly maintains its flavor and viscosity under chilled high dilution. EWB, which I think is far superior neat and with a single ice cube, does not handle higher dilution on the rocks nearly as well. Since I do enjoy my bourbons on the rocks about a third of the time (especially in the summer months), I nearly always have a bottle on hand. Its nowhere near the best bottle I have, but it is well made stuff. If it were priced at the same level of EWB I would probably buy even more.

    I would have stopped there.

I love beam whiskies but I don't particularly like this one. It isn't bad, but it isn't good either. Perhaps I just had a bad experience but there are other 80 proofers I'd rather buy or drink. At a bar, I'd rather have JD.

I didn't stop there, because I don't think the stuff is terrible. Perhaps a touch boring, but not terrible.

Which is what they're going for. There is something to be said for a company that can make as much as they do and make every bottle the same.

I'd consider JBW my gateway bourbon and one I come back to occassionally as a mixer. Just finished off a bottle right before this BOTM. This most recent bottle has confirmed for me I've grown past JBW. I like the "beam funk" but its just too much in JBW, in addition to cheaper, better tasting options when I'm looking for a bourbon to mix.

When glancing down that section of the aisle, I stop at YL or Benchmark. JBW is never an option. If I can't drink it neat I don't want it in my stash - and to my palate its only purpose is as a mixer.

I can drink it neat but I don't know if that says something about JBW or me.

I bought a bottle recently and my impressions are:

not as good as in 1995 (college)
way better than 2008 (last bottle I bought)
way better than Beam's Choice green label
not nearly good enough to keep in stock.

We really are spoiled when we can say something of the consistent quality of Beam White isn't worth bothering with.
