Re: What bourbon are you drinking in Australia? - Winter 2014

One day I'll do a side by side tasting of my EWSB '93 thru '97 bottles (from back in the day when it was $40 each). Got 2 of each stashed in a cupboard. They need to get opened I say

If you can find a '98 and '99 I will send you a spare '00 to get you to the turn of the Century

I have been drinking some I.W.Harper 12 year old that my folks brought back from Japan - it is smooth, very drinkable.

    Also drinking Rusell Reserve.

Cam, I wised I had brought a hell of a lot more EWSB when it was $40

So a crazy question. My brother-in-law lives in Melbourne but is coming to the US to visit at the end of October. My wife's favorite bourbon is Blanton's. I can see online that Dan Murphys has Blanton's gold, but does anyone loca know of anyplace that has straight from the barrel? Or is this something that might be released later on? Thanks for any info!

We don't get Straight from the Barrel here - it's pretty much an Europe/Asia only product as far as I know. He could try nicks.com.au as they've had it in the past, but it's small quantities when they do, and usually pretty expensive. Dan's do have the green label Family Reserve though. Might be an option if she's never tried it.

Thank you very much for the info! I agree, the green label is probably a good option. Now just to convince my mule, err, brother-in-law to bring a bottle or two of it with him. Since he always brings several bottles from here back he should have the room!

Some places in the Caribbean reportedly can have Straight from the Barrel as well. Not that it helps you or your mule! I have not had much luck finding it even in Europe of late and am kind of boycotting Blanton's anyway. Haven't bought a bottle in several years and don't have any on hand at present. See no reason I should have to go to Europe to get something that is made here and so I don't buy the watered down stuff they offer here.

We leave for a vacation to Singapore in 11 days... I have Blanton's SFTB on my short list, but at $150 Singapore dollars (approx. $125 AU / $115 US), I'll probably only get one. Here's a list from the only online specialist store I could find:

I'm open to suggestions / ideas on what else to look out for or pick up there

I would be all over the Nikka Coffey malt, Nikka from the barrel and of course Yellow Spot despite the rather high costs but I know you aren't a malt guy! The Kavalan would probably pique my interest as well.

Nothing much in the Bourbon section appeals to me other than the Blanton's SFTB due to the price but I have much different options available to me than you do so that would make a big difference I suppose!

I don't think it's your usual tipple Cam, but I suggest one of the Caroni rums. The distillery is no longer around, all the bottlings listed are 50%+abv, the prices are comparatively very reasonable and I think it would be a good way to try some old school, high proof rum that's not sweetened and 'liqueurified' (invented word) like most rum seems to be these days. I've been hankering to get my hands on some of this stuff for years but can't find it anywhere here. Almost want to book a trip to Singapore just to get some!
