Bourbon in the movies

I was watching the excellent Hitchcock movie "North By Northwest" last night (hadn't seen it in ages) and must point out perhaps the best attempted murder in cinema history (since it didn't work)-- bad guy James Mason and Martin Landau force good Cary Grant into drinking and entire bottle of Bourbon (after sifting through the possibilites of Vodka, Rum, Scotch, etc.-- excellent choice by jove!), and then attempt to get him (Cary) to drive off a cliff. Except for the cliff part-- not a bad way to go I thought. I couldn't make out the brand in the film, but I hope it was Stagg or Van Winkle.

One excellent example of Bourbon in the Movies, I thought. Anyone have other examples?

Good catch, how long have they made stagg?

I the old movies brand was not A BIG DEAL like it is now. You can bet today they would have turned the bottle so you could see and MM or some other would have paid.

One of my favorite movie bourbon movie references is in the great "Forbidden Planet" (1956, Walter Pidgeon, Ann Francis, Leslie Nielson, Earl Holliman, Robby the Robot, et al.). Earl Holliman gets Robby ("Robert") to make him 60 gallons of genuine Kansas City Ancient Rocket bourbon ("four pints of 120 proof bourbon, well that ain't natural sir"). Without a trace of hangover!

For rye, there is always that great Bogie movie (cannor remember the name) where he goes into the bookstore and tells the woman cashier that he has a bottle of pretty good rye in his pocket and she immediately closes the shop ... Ed

I was thinking that line was from Key Largo, but there was no bookstore setting there. Hmmm...

Could it be that Bogie drank rye in several films?

This one was very subtle, and you can definitely tell it was before the days of "product placement", but a few days ago I was watching the Steve McQueen classic poker movie "The Cincinnati Kid." It's set in old-timey New Orleans. Anyway, one of the whiskey bottles on the bar was Wild Turkey.

In "The Hustler," Paul Newman gets stupid on J.T.S. Brown bourbon while Jackie Gleason's Minnesota Fats sips a blended whiskey that's probably a placebo.
