LOL....I've spent more on bourbon in the last year than I have in the last 20 years.....and it's all SB.com's fault.![]()

SB has given me an excuse to experiment. I too have bought more bottles of bourbon in the last 6 mos. than I bought in the previous 20 years.
You guys aren't kidding! One year ago, I owned exactly four bottles of bourbon, none purchased since 2002 - one each of Maker's, Pappy 20, Lot B (both Lawrenceburg), and a 375 of WTRB that I'd received as a gift. Today, I count 35-odd types of bourbon, plus a couple dozen spare bottles in the bunker. And that's not counting my beloved ryes and other American whiskeys.
All thanks to you, my SB.com friends. Cheers!
Dave
*raises hand* Er, me too.

1 x Four Roses Small Batch (Signed by Jim Rutledge)
1 x Jefferson's Reserve 15yo #98/2400 Batch #27
Thanks ThomasH!!Your hunting skills in Florida were much appreciated
(not to mention finding signed FR in KY!)
I also today in the mail received a Makers Mark Black wax.
Not a bad looking bunch of bottles!

I was in Covington, KY yesterday evening and bought two bottles I knew were not available in Ohio. I stopped at the first liquor store I saw, not far from the river directly off I-75. I thought Joseph's Beverage Center in Toledo was a big liquor store but the place was enormous, and the cashier told me they weren't really big compared with some of the others in Covington! Anyhow, the two bottles were AAA 10 yr. and Four Roses Small Batch. I can't decide now whether I like 10 yr. or 10 star better. Four Roses is now my favorite bourbon. But since it's not available here in NW Ohio I'll have to stick to OGD and WT when my budget allows, AAA or Beam's Choice when I'm short of money. I have many relatives in KY, Four Roses has given me a reason to visit them more often.
tp,
The black wax Maker's Mark is made for Japanese export only, if I'm not mistaken (although the Whiskey Exchange sells it too). It's higher proof than usual (95). It's supposed to have a richer flavor, as the following quote from the black label bottle suggests:
I found the quotation on a thread from back in 2003 discussing Maker's Mark export bottlings.Makers Mark Select
Our 95 proof Maker's Mark Select reflects my own individual preference in the Maker's Mark style. While I'd never alter the soft, clean and gentle taste Dad achieved with his original creation of Maker's Mark, my tastes have always leaned towards a slightly more robust, more full flavored whisky-a perfect complement to our 90 proof red wax Makers Mark. I hope you enjoy Makers Mark Select as much as I do. Bill Samuels Jr.
In addition, and I don't recall where unfortunately, I read that the black wax version uses a different yeast. All of the other Maker's are the same recipe (although other versions have higher proofs, e.g., the gold wax is 101 proof). I got the impression there seems to be some consensus that between all of the versions - red wax, black wax, gold wax and VIP - the black wax is the favorite. I'd love to try it.
Attached is a picture of the bottle from Whiskey Exchange.

Yeah that's right....it's the japanese Maker's bottle, although I am made to believe that they are no longer making this, that is was discontinued 1 or 2 years ago...maybe someone can confirm this....Ed have you seen any on the shelves in your local hunting grounds?

And maybe, just maybe I may get over the different wax color thing one day and drink this puppy, perhaps even do a side by side with my gold wax 101!
