Whiskey and Music

Well we all know whiskey goes well food. Steak or BBQ being my favs. Many of us also know that whiskey goes well with a nice cigar. Booker's with a Opus X being a very compatable pairing. But what music sets the mood for whiskey sipping. I'm kinda going through a classic jazz faze with John Coltrane, Wes Montgomery, Miles Davis, Ray Charles and Nina Simone (Feeling Good). I am not sure why as I have never been big into this style of music before. So I ask this question what music do you put on when your enjoying a pour? Is your music out there or in the background? And lastly, can the type of music you play take an "off bottle of bourbon" and make it taste that little bit better?

ie: the above music and old bottle of WT Rare Breed that I have had collecting dust for the last 3 years. WTRB is usaully a good pour but this bottle never really got it done until last night with a little jazz.

Everytime i drink bourbon i put some blues on,no matter what but it reminds me of my younger days ,skulling bottles of 4 roses in a small pub in the city with some good friends.If i play any Christy Moore i go for some sms,it makes me feel happy,i know its stupid.But without music i can enjoy my pour as well.

I really like the jazz and bourbon combo. Of course, I like jazz anyway, but somehow it just seems appropriate to enjoy the two together.

I don't know about the music making the bourbon any better than if I were drinking it in silence. I think it's a matter of making the overall experience more enjoyable, rather than one element improving the other, if that makes any sense.

I'm not really into the music that seems to be typically associated with bourbon (jazz, country, blue-grass, etc...) and I don't know what category the music I listen to most would fall into because I've seen it listed under so many categories. I like bands like Sol Invictus, Death In June, and Sopor Aeternus when I'm drinking and when I'm not drinking. I guess the most consistently used label for at least 2 of these bands would be "neo-folk" (although, I think I read somewhere that Tony Wakeford (Sol Invictus) prefers the term "folk noir" to describe his music). Last night I listened to Tony Wakeford's limited Believe Me cd while I had some Weller Antique 107, unfortunately the 9 year old CDr it is on suffers from laser rot, hopefully the record company will come through with those mp3's soon because from what I can hear it sounds like a great show! Technical flaws aside it was a pretty good pairing but for me there really isn't a particular band or style of music that I find goes well with bourbon, it's just whatever I'm in the mood to listen to.

Blues. Muddy Waters, Big Bill Morganfield, John Lee Hooker, howlin' wolf, T-bone Walker, Etta James. Bluesie clasic rock; Clapton, The Doors (love the song "roadhouse blues"), Jimmy Hendricks, Stevie Ray Vaughan, George Thorogood, ZZ Top (quite a bit of blues influence there), The Rolling Stones (less bluesie but still realy good). Other favorite artists would include Peter frampton and Tony Joe White ( his version of "Polk Salad Annie" makes Elvis's look bad).

Additionally, of special note, Iron Butterfly's In-A-gadda-Da-Vida (long version) is a hell of a good drinkin' song.

While I normally go for the tequila or rum with Buffet, I don't think there is a better song for serious drinking of bourbon than "Let's get drunk and ....." (Not sure about board rules so leaving title unfinished).

I'm gonna ride the fence and say Blues and/or classic country. It works well with both, just depends on my mood.

All of the above are good choices - but I also like jam bands, especially String Cheese Incident, which, sadly, played their final concert last Sunday.

Tonight, I finished downloading their final stand (Aug. 9, 10, 11, and 12) at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado... I haven't yet had a chance to play it though.
