Hi all, I am not a bourbon drinker but my boyfriend is... For a gift I got him the Pappy Van Winkle 23 yr. I hope he will like it but I am not sure. He started drinking bourbon about 2 years ago. I know he has had WT rare breed, Woodforf Reserve, JD Single Barrel, knob Creek, Makers Mark, etc. I also don't know which year I purchased. Is there any way to tell which year it is?

The quickest way is to post a picture of the bottle and bag. There are persons on the board that should be able to give you an answere with in minutes.

If it says Lawrenceburg on the label it is older. Past that I am not much help.

As far as dating it goes I know of no way.
There have been, I think, only three releases of the 23yo.
The 4th coming this Fall.
The original came in a green tinted bottle and was, again I am trying to remember from what I have read here on this site,... and was not a "wheater".
I don't know the release date.
If it was the third one it was released in December '05.
I have one of those, marked Bottle #A209.
Did you get it off the shelf in a store?

It is labeled B759. I had a hard time finding it. I actually emailed the Van Winkle website about the new batch that was supposed to be released and to see where I could purchase it. Julian emailed me back with a list of suppliers in NY and NJ. I live in PA so you can only get what the state will supply and the 23 yr wasn't on the state list. I started to call all the people on the list I found two places that had it. The one was $250 and they wouldn't ship it. The other place was $200 and they shipped it. When I spoke to them originally they said the had a half dozen bottles.

Pappy 23's are still on the shelf here, in KY, and in IL. (From what I've seen) It's the high price that tends to keep them there!
I wouldn't use your state as an indicator of what's really available out there.
