Re: What Are You Drinking Tonight, Winter'07/'08

Tonight, one of my first bourbon purchases, which I have not pulled out in awhile...Woodford Reserve - batch 15 - bottle 02199 "Approved by Lincoln A Henderson" 90.4 proof. I think I bought this in 2002 at the distillery.

Mild nose, it seems drier that some my other bourbons even at 90.4 proof, fairly lively mouth but the taste is not as complex as some. It does have a unique flavor quality...maybe leather I am of mixed mind on this whiskey....it is ok.

I don't pretend to be good at tasting notes...for comparison here are some:

    Woodford Reserve Tasting Notes:

Color: Sharp, brilliant dark honey amber
    >> Agree

Nose: Strong, powerful vanilla overlays a rich fruit medley, with mint, sweet Cocoa and a dash of black pepper spice
    >> Yes, vanilla, the rest I guess if I take a nice long inhale....power of suggestion?

Taste: Rich, rounded and smooth, with complex hints of mint, tobacco, leather, and fruit. Toffee and spice notes abound.
    >> I would not call it rich...not that smooth...possibly ok on the flavors.

Finish:* Smooth, long, spicy and warming, but with a noticeable absence of heat.
    >> Again, not that smooth...yes to warming...not a long finish.

So far, I've managed to stay away from Woodford Reserve, privmarily based on the mixed reviews here. Those who like it, good for them. To each, his own. But I'll probably never give it a shot, kind of like Bakers and Basil Hayden.

Oh yea, I had this year's GTS. I watered it down to about 110 proof. I'm starting to think this is average bourbon when watered down near a hundred. Oh well, I have last year's.

Yeah, it kind of fits next to that bottle of Basil Haydens...another early purchase that I have never really warmed to .....drinkable..just not my fav.

Michael Jackson and Dave Broom give it 8.5

Look at the side by side notes....I could make it up too! Nothing in common.

    Stagg 131.8, I think that's the spring '05 but I'm not sure.

Out to dinner, had 2 Baker's with a cube. Finishing at home with some Lot B and Blanton's.

Opened a new bottle tonight to share with my poker buddies. W.L. Weller Special Reserve. Not bad....very smooth bourbon. Not very much intensity but to be expected as a wheater...still very good though.

Yesterday was a good one for bourbon.
We went to Zingerman's Roadhouse in Ann Arbor. They have 35 bourbons and I felt right at home.
I started with an Old Fashion with Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit and after dinner a Weller Centennial neat.
    My wife had The Kentucky Bedwarmer a drink that they invented, it consists of;
    Blenhiem Spicy Ginger Ale
    Very Old Barton 90 proof
    Orange Curacao
    Gary Reagan's Orange Bitters

I had the Texas Cabrito sandwich which consists of slow smoked hand-pulled free range goat.
They feature recipes from all over the country especially the South.
Look over their menu at www.zingermansroadhouse.com this is a very unique place.

A marathon BS session with some friends last night with a bunch of different pours (actually one or few too many), including cracking open the new Willett Pot Still: Not overly complex but a delightful citrusy sweetness (IIRC)
